About Arima Lodge

Context

Within the domed city of a nearby future, Kai the bellhop rides the elevator of Arima Lodge, the hotel he works at, up from the ground floor to get a relief. However, after a secretive man rushes into the elevator and compels him to get to the 100th floor —the rooftop— instead, he starts to realize something very serious is amiss.

Gameplay

Arima Lodge is a free to play short 5-minute-long story with a locked camera that occurs completely within an elevator. It has limited dialogue options from the perspective of Kai the bellhop, and QTE events on screen to open and close the elevator doors whenever a new character enters.

A very short (six minutes) but fun game.

Arima Lodge delivers a short but memorable experience driven by atmosphere and a sharp presentation. The story has a lot of potential, centering on several characters trapped in a hotel elevator, each with their own background and urgent destination. You’re only given brief glimpses into their lives, leaving you to fill in the gaps with your imagination, which adds to the intrigue. Despite its very short length, the atmosphere is tense and effective. The ticking elevator sounds and quick-time responses build constant suspense and urgency, making the situation feel complex and dramatic almost immediately. However, I wish the game was a bit longer and offered a stronger sense that player choices truly mattered. More impactful decisions would have added depth and replayability. It’s a five-minute panic play — ten if you play it twice — and well worth that time.

<Arima Lodge> maybe not a nice game, but a nice flash fiction.
