Astrality

"Astrality" is a student project from Digipen, who are sometimes capable of some surprisingly good games. But not this year, unfortunately the students failed the course (which makes us ask why they insist on publishing every little bit of student homework on Steam... sure, it makes the students feel happy, but is this good for gamers?) This is a third person bullet hell/arcade shooter where you see the back end of a ship flying down a "tunnel" (not unlike an endless runner) and shoot stuff on the way. This is a poor game design choice whenever it gets done, because, well, the developers never considered that the ship itself obscures your view of the enemies and bullets. The technical execution is no better at all. In terms of visuals, this features fairly low quality low poly 3D visuals which will deter a lot of gamers, understandably. Gaming is a visual medium, and while some developers struggle with creating high quality visuals, failing to do so is a disservice to gamers. It's very difficult to recommend bad looking games. Astrality Positives: + Nice retrowave look + Simple but quite fun + Nice sounds and music + The chatting + Cheats + Different difficulty levels + Powerups + Its free Negatives: - The boss fights are unfair, hard and takes forever - Making the health bar tied to shooting accuracy is not the best solution (and its builds up so slow as well) - Aim accuracy is not the best - Using controller makes it even harder (use keyboard and mouse) - Wrong size ratio when objects come closer - Very short (over in 0,5-1 hour) Well I have to say its quite impressing, knowing this game is made from scratch by some students. And its got a lot going for it. Its retro look and simplicity makes it quite fun, at least when playing the regular levels. I think the boss fights ruins the fun and is just unfair, hard and takes too long. And making the health bar tied to shooting accuracy was a wrong decision. Luckily there are different difficulty levels to choose from, and even cheats you can use if you struggle. And believe me, if you choose the higher levels, man its difficult... All in all: alot can be improved, but for as it its right now, its okay and its free as well. So you might just give it a go. …
