- In BIRDCAGE, the player controls the experimental RADON gunship HALCYON. The HALCYON is equipped with a wide shot, focus shot, and its main offensive and defensive weapon, The SWORD.
- BIRDCAGE features an engaging sci-fi story, set in a divergent human future. Inspired by games like Metal Gear Solid, BIRDCAGE touches on futuristic science and technology, political and military power struggles and the nature of the human unconscious mind.
- Story Mode, the game’s main mode is set across six stages featuring mid-bosses, stage bosses and narrative interludes.
- Arcade Mode is Story Mode without the narrative, aimed at letting players go after score in a quicker, more convenient way.
- Score Attack is a race against the clock to chase the highest score, while honing your skills at the game. Enemies spawn endlessly within a set time limit.
- Inspired by 90s video games and anime, BIRDCAGE makes use of techniques such as sprite scaling, pre-rendered backgrounds and limited textures to mimic the look of early 3D games.
- The game's soundtrack combines the sounds of 90s music hardware with modern synthesis and samples to create something authentic and exciting. BIRDCAGE features over an hour of dynamic music, hundreds of bespoke sound effects and retro-styled voice acting for stage bosses.

BIRDCAGE has a pretty solid foundation for something that could be more. I'd like to start with the aspects of the game that really stood out to me and pulled me in. The visual design is really strong here and I love the acid trip like visuals as well as the character portraits. The backgrounds can at times be a little distracting, but overall I think they created something visually distinct. The soundtrack and sound design are also top notch. All the songs in the soundtrack are bangers and it's probably one of the better shooting game soundtracks, I've heard in a while. The weapon sound effects are great and maybe the only thing I would tweak is make the sound effect for when you get hit a bit more impactful. The end of level score screen music is top notch. Overall the score screen adds a lot to making completing a level all that much more satisfying. I like the codex calls and the codex database. It's always fun to have a bit of that world building and character dialog. It doesn't do it too much, while giving you just enough to keep you curious. Although, I am still trying to piece all of it together. The gameplay doesn't seem to really try anything new, but it's competent for w…2 found this helpful
Imagine of Hideo Kojima and rose-engine went back in time to 1997 and made a PS1 bullet hell shmup That didn't happen but if it did, BIRDCAGE is what you'd get.
I forgot how much of an adrenaline rush a challenge can be, great game.
Amazing game, I just suck at it lol. Must play Shmup. Worth full price.
A lovely little gem of a shoot 'em up, oozing with style and with interesting mechanics. Solid soundtrack, lovely visuals, fun ships, challenging bosses... lots to love here, and I'll be chipping away at the arcade mode for a while, I feel. Highly recommended.
Excellent game, awesome PSX style graphics, really nice OST, and great gameplay. I hope they continue with a follow up or another shmup, talented dev. After latest patches can be played with arcade stick , no need to use right stick anymore :)
