About Break the Loop

Humanity is coming to an end. An abyssal monster has awakened, determined to enslave the world. But that was without counting on the ingenuity of Friedrich, a genius Chronomancer, who, with the help of his time-traveling machine, forms a top team of the greatest heroes of the past!

Features

- Compose your team of 4 heroes from the 12 available characters
- Create your own timeline with a multitude of random events
- Face your opponents in an original turn-based combat system
- Strengthen your heroes before facing the ultimate threat

Form a group of heroes

For each new game, build your team of 4 legendary heroes from the 12 available. Tank, Brawler, Support or Specialist, each hero has a set of 6 skills and 5 unique passives.

Create your Timeline

To maximize your chances against the end boss, choose the events you will encounter: treasures, merchants, multiple-choice dialogues, etc. It's up to you to create the path that will allow you to gain power and create the ideal build.

Dynamic turn-based combat

The characters' actions directly influence their position. After a hero's attack, they leave their position to the next character and automatically reposition themselves within the group based on the energy expended. This mechanic creates a dynamic rotation and opens the way for the development of strategies, as opponents are also subject to these same rules.

Break the Loop is a great turn-based RPG in the likes of Darkest Dungeon, Pixel Heroes and other roguelites. I love this game and get a lot of enjoyment out of it, but I also have had more intense rage and frustration when things go wrong in this game than any other game in years. I can get lost in the game for hours and then ragequit but still come back later.

Break the Loop is a great roguelike rpg. It's not breaking the mold, but it's got a few tricks up its sleeve and has charm in spades making it so that it doesn't feel like you're looping back to a game you've already played. Did I write the awkward previous line purely so I could use "break" and "loop" in a single sentence? How dare you, of course not. Between the 12 character options, different passive ability options, and the many capsule upgrades that pop out of a mad scientist's vending machine, there's a good amount of build variety as long as you're willing to experiment a bit. Some other reviews have rightly pointed out that certain party members have more natural synergies with each other, but I have found that that alone will not lead you to success at higher difficulties. All of the best party compositions are found INSIDE the run not before it. After character selection, you are greeted by the timeline. Being used to the branching maps typical in games like Slay the Spire or FTL, I was unsure about the timeline mechanic, but it definitely grew on me. At the beginning of a region, you are given a selection of nodes that can be placed upon a timeline. Then, as your part…

It took me a little time to get into this game, but once it did, I was hooked. I didn't find that it got too repetitive over the three scenarios (and three difficulties on top of that). According to my profile, that was 7/33 successful runs. Once I had 100%'d the game, I did briefly experiment with the random team (allowing for duplicate classes), but I didn't feel the desire to finish another run - it felt like I had already done everything. The combat is fun and each scenario and monster type takes a different approach (the zombie swarm was probably the hardest), however I did end up settling on one team that I enjoyed the most and worked the best. Carmenide, Hellmut, Elisen and Albrecht - with Albrecht being the most consistent. All but one of which are characters you start the game with anyway. I did try out every other character, and some had their uses (Ley actually seemed useful), but it is more about how your team works as a whole. You need evasion/dodge, healing, status effects and silence. Ojo'jin, Upery and Foxman were the least used by me. I think maybe I would have liked more characters or ability customisation. There is a genie capsule that can replace ability 1, b…

Mid, doesn't flow well, starts in the middle (not in term of story, but in terms of pacing)
