You play as Jonathan Harker, Dracula’s real estate agent, completing work tasks while exploring the castle, speaking with its inhabitants, and hacking into computers. BYTE is a tactics RPG that adapts the classic novel Dracula, by Bram Stoker, with an emphasis on the themes of queerness and technology.Jonathan Harker, a young real estate agent from New York City, is summoned to Detroit, Oregon in 1990 to help a mysterious Count Dracula purchase a collection of properties in NYC. Jonathan's proficiency with new technologies like fax machines, telephones, and the internet helped him rise quickly at his firm and earn this assignment, but the closer Jonathan gets to the castle, the wearier he grows.BYTE's story is told through visual novel scenes that use a mixture of in-world and surreal 3D art and full-motion video to accompany the text of the story.Technology permeates BYTE both in its world and in its presentation and the game is a celebration and exploration of early digital computer technology.At the castle, Jonathan finds that the Count has already equipped his castle with an internet connection, fax lines, and solar power to speed up his work. Despite this, Jonathan finds more friction than expected, as it seems nearly everything in the castle is hidden behind some form of password protection.BYTE features grid-based tactics battles that happen when Jonathan needs to hack into a computer.Combat involves completing tasks rather than fighting enemies. Tasks can include collecting data, getting through firewalls, installing software, and more.Mysterious circumstances bring all of Jonathan's friends and even his fiancé to the castle with him. It doesn't take long for Dracula to demonstrate interests in some of Jonathan's closest friends, leading Jonathan, among others to grow suspicious.Queerness colors Dracula from its first page to its last. BYTE re-examines the queer identity of the novel through modern looks at gender, sexuality, and desire.

BYTE is super stylish and has a great OST. The writing is also really good and it's a fun adaptation of the classic story in a 90s American setting. The character Jonathon is really funnily written too. The hacking puzzles provide some challenge and strategy elements to the game beyond the narrative and vibes. Definitely recommend to check out if you want a good halloween game/or just a vibey game in general or are a Dracula fan!3 found this helpful
A very neat and interesting game, even if I feel like some of it was lost on me because I haven't read the original. I'd recommend it to anyone whose on board with the premise and the aesthetic. Only complaints is some jankiness, especially with controller support (my one is fairly older, and the dead zones weren't big enough to tell when i wasn't pushing on the sticks.). Byte is the sort of game that makes me wish I had the option to give a mixed review on Steam. To begin, though it is does have RPG and tactics elements as advertised, Byte is just as much if not more of a visual novel. The atmosphere, music, and writing are very compelling, and the game successfully evokes Dracula despite taking liberties with the setting and plot. The art style is striking, and feels suitably dreary. Unfortunately, the game suffers tremendously in terms of its gameplay and pacing. Byte feels repetitive and slow, and while some of this is likely a deliberate choice to hit similar story beats to the novel on which it is based, the sluggish pace gets grating, especially towards its end. The gameplay has an interesting foundation with tactically using abilities in grid-based encounters, but unfortunately builds very little upon it. Though some new skills are unlocked and new enemies are encountered, the player is largely doing the same simple tasks with the same slow animations throughout. There are also several bugs present, though nothing so severe as to significantly impede progress. While the game has several glaring weaknesses, it is difficult to give a negative …1 found this helpful
An incredibly charming game. Funny and surprising at times, and moody and atmospheric at others. Very well written. Unquestionably a lovely work of art, and i'm probably only halfway through1 found this helpful
