About Cage of Roses
Meike is the daughter of the noble von Essen family. Once one of the wealthiest families in Germany, the von Essen name has since been tarnished after a string of bad business decisions led them to financial ruin.Desperate to be restored to their former wealth and glory, Meike’s parents try to marry their only daughter off to the self-made businessman Walter Gerhardt. Meike possesses no fond feelings towards Walter – she hardly knows the man – but her mother is determined to make the match work, and Meike can see no way out of her impending engagement. Meike’s future as a wife to the cold, careless Walter seems set in stone – until the carriage bearing her and her family through the forest, to Walter’s home in Augsburg, is set upon by bandits. Meike’s parents are killed, though Meike is able to escape alongside her faithful maid, Henrieke. The pair dash through the woods, searching for sanctuary – and in so doing they find an eerie, tumbledown castle hidden among the trees. This castle, as Meike soon discovers, belongs to a young woman called Magdalena. Short of stature, with flowing fair hair, Magdalena looks like a sweet, innocent thing, but there’s more to her than meets the eye.
Magdalena is, in fact, a vampire – and now she has Meike in her clutches, it seems unlikely that Meike will ever be able to escape.

This brought me joy and made me feel seen in ways I did not realize I was lacking. Vampirism is a fabulous allegory for queer and transgender representation; being at odds with one's body and desires. Though there is explicit queer representation, the vampirism adds more nuance and intrigue in the exploration of queer themes. There are also strong themes of abuse, abuse recovery, and redemption, and the narrative device of vampirism adds depth to these as well. I really enjoyed the visceral nature of the writing, describing the characters' thoughts and sensations. I adore the artwork and the music is wonderful.5 found this helpful
Magdelena's exposition dumps (edit: plural) at the beginning of the game are one of the worst writing crimes I've read this year1 found this helpful
I enjoyed the gothic horror/ Victorian setting, the story was quite intriguing, and the artwork was great with great character designs. However there was a little too much repetitive dialog and inner monologuing about the events that happened prior, with little new information being sprinkled throughout. Also a lot of the same panels being reused over and over which isn't uncommon for vns but the art is so fantastic in this one I would've liked more scenes. Lastly, I wished there was more development between the 2 love interests to really sell it, and less time at the maid quarters section.
I did enjoy reading this visual novel! I'm a fan of historical gl/Yuri stories, and even much more a fan when they have beautiful, breathtaking artwork!! I will say, I found myself wanting to skip past the side characters parts, as they felt to drag on at times, but maybe that's because I'm impatient and want to get to the main couple's romance. I also got a bit annoyed at times as some descriptions were repeated multiple times, like how
Mieke is bad at cards
, for an example. I think it's also important to note that there are no choices or options or different endings for you to select. I knew this going in, but wanted to add that for anyone who may want to know reading this review. I also recommend getting the adult patch if you're into the spicier scenes (only, of course, if you're an adult), the added artwork is incredible as well ❤️ Though it isn't needed to enjoy the story as it is!
The artwork and character design in this vn are breathtaking, I do love me a love interest that is finally not an abusive, manipulative and horrible person in a gl. I personally loved Lena's character and her relationship with Meike.
Sumptuous, passionate, bloody, and intoxicating: this is peak vampire yuri.
