Captain Blood

I feel like to review Captain Blood we need to look at little deeper than just the surface level. This game was considered Vaporware or stuck in "development hell" for a long time over a legal battle, pertaining to the rights of the series. afterwards the studio developing Captain blood declared bankruptcy and the game became cancelled. Captain Blood should have been released like 10+ years ago and it SHOWS. this game essentially plays like a worse "god of war clone" for a lack of better words. You have your standard executions, upgrade system, "button spam+ qte" combat. However it almost feels...nostalgic in a way? Playing Captain blood is like booting up your dad's ps2 to experience what games were like when he was young (i'm too unc to be saying that btw) if you take it for what it is. it's a fun time, It can be annoying, the boat sections are awful, combat gets spammy, writing isn't great. but man....most important to me it is so nice to see this game get released in a playable state. Been wanting a game like this for awhile and I finally got a copy let me say this game feel's like a classic ps2 game its god of war wearing a pirate theme mask its fun go buy it . Edit so the plot thickens Funny thing is, this game was supposed to release like 17 years ago But the 2008 financial crisis hit the Russian video games industry real hard So the game got canned And like 3 or 4 years ago someone just leaked the game on some random torrent And people started playing it and it turned out that the game was basically finished Like 1 thing missing was an English dub Oh, this game is also technically a spin off (of at least originated as a pin off) of the Sea Dogs series The second game in which is, through the magic of Bethesda, and officially licensed Pirates of the Caribbean game

This is a weird recommend, considering I refunded the game, but hear me out. The game is cool, it has a really neat style. It is nothing noteworthy, in terms of the gameplay, and the jank is... well, everywhere. It feels a bit unfair to play, at times, and it is highly repetitive. I suppose my recommend comes from the fact that the game is a time machine, it feels like it belongs back in those beautiful days of the PS2 or Xbox 360. It is 100% something to play, especially on sale, when you want to put those nostalgia goggles on and play something from a much simpler time in gaming. Also, the fact that it ever even got published? That deserves props in and of itself.

There are too many things that don't work well in Captain Blood, stuff that was bad in the gaming scene even back when this game was conceived. I'm talking about unbalanced enemies, ranged enemies that will dodge you even though you did hit them, lot of staggering on the receiving end while your enemies will barely stagger, insipid voice acting, bullets hitting you through walls, a few frustrating missions, illogical plot, quick-time events that feel unnecessary, unspoken dialogues during cutscenes, achievements randomly unlocking... Bosses are sponges, but at least they provide some variety, power ups feel useful only during mid-late stages of the game, levels are generally acceptable except a few ones where you are relentlessly bombarded by enemy ships and boarded by enemies while you (alone) have to sink your foes using cannons. Sounds intriguing, but it isn't. What stuns me, is that this game was left untouched for years, and when they had the chance to continue and finish it, the result is still underwhelming.
