Big fan of KnS so I was excited when I heard this was finally coming to Steam after all these years. I definitely recommend Cartagra to murder mystery fans and anyone that has played and enjoyed KnS. Still waiting for gore restoration patch at time of review.

Unless the conclusion is amazing, I am disappointed in this game after playing the sequel, which is the first game in a three game series Kara No Shojo (The Shell: Pt 1). The main character in this game is less likable for me than Reiji in The Shell. Neither are big personality types, but this main char is more stupid around women in that he doesn’t catch on when women are showing interest in him, which for a detective is pretty unbelievable. And it’s also silly how many women find Shugo our protagonist interesting bc he is not. New art looks good, although I never saw how the original looked. But Steam not allowing gore or sensual lewd scenes means it’s all cropped out or removed completely here. That’s a shame. It’s a dark story and those scenes while grotesque or extremely sensual, added to the gravity of what’s happening and the mental relief the char are looking for as a distraction.

This is a bit of a mixed opinion between the OG game and the new Steam HD remake. As much as I like Innocent Grey’s work, I feel Cartagra is a bit of a downgrade compared to the Kara no Shoujo (KnS) trilogy, which is expected since it was their first work.Even so, I pretty much enjoyed it despite its flaws. My main issues are:Shugo’s competence: Shugo doesn't seem as capable as he's described. He only really shines when he uncovers Arishima and Akako's scheme.Over-reliance on others: He relies too much on other people. I feel like the VN would be much better if Nana hadn't uncovered most of the secrets. It would be so much better if they had made him more like Reiji, or at least made him a more independent character.Excessive H-scenes: The sheer amount of H-scenes amount to nothing, since more than 90% of them hold no narrative meaning at all. Those thoughts aside, I really like the rest of the game. Most plot twists were really good and well-made. I feel that the new HD Steam remake did a fantastic job with this VN, making it so much more likable and enjoyable.The visual novel also has really good characters like Toji and Yura—both are best girls. Disappointed as it's published on Steam. Be sure of that, it doesn't include a patch for 18+ and original gore content. Yes indeed, all of the sexual content is censored and some of the gore scenes are adjusted to be more mild. It makes me wonder if it's necessary to sacrifice adult readers' pursuit of morbid content for the sake of a more artistic rendering of atmosphere and of all age to be appropriate to play, especially in such a detective-like visual novel which was made by Innocent Grey. BTW, another complaint is that the remastered version with HD makes the Showa aesthetic gone. Well, that's pretty subjective. This is why I don't play The shell part: 1 on Steam In my point of view, sexual content and gore content are absolutely necessary. However, to someone, these are flaws that strike in CARTAGRA. To meet the needs of both parties, an optional patch is definitely extremely helpful. ( I think these adult contents have partly perfected the presentation and connotation of the entire story. The artistic part and 18+ part are not in confliction. But, let's see.) So, what the heck, you sell it on Steam with a fkin high price and even without a little patch for 18+? Don't try…
