About ChessRogue
ChessRogue is a chess themed strategic roguelike, where you hire a party of pieces to traverse through the dungeons of increasing complexity. The goal of each level is to either capture the enemy king, or traverse down the staircase.
Featuring
Featuring
- Online leaderboards! All scores are tracked and automatically submitted to the leaderboards. There are three separate boards, one for White and Black mode, and one for overall XP, which is gained from capturing pieces and traversing through levels.
- Fast AI for a fast paced experience The AI will respond almost instantaneously to your moves!
- Two distinct game modes with varying difficulties, White and Black. White being more difficult, due to perma-death for all pieces, and black being easier due to piece persistence through out the dungeons.
- 15 different piece types! Explore the history of chess and its modifications with historical pieces that have been relegated to history, and special combination pieces that dominate the board. Unlock new pieces as you continue to play.
- Grow your army! In Black Player Mode, every three levels you are given the option of three random pieces to add to your roster. In White Player Mode, after each level you are given the option to purchase and sell pieces based on gold collected by defeating pieces.
- Randomized chess dungeons! As you delve further and further into the dungeon, the complexity of the dungeon and the roster of enemy pieces will gradually increase in difficulty!
- Continued updates! ChessRogue is still in early access with many future updates planned, such as controller and better SteamDeck (ChessRogue already runs on Steamdeck, but better controls will be implemented) support!

A bit barebones, but still enjoyable. If the dev ever tries to flesh this concept out I think it has the potential to be amazing.3 found this helpful
Cheap, simple, fun. Don't expect countless hours of high fidelity gameplay the game is as simple as the premise, worth checking out if you enjoy chess and chess puzzles though. Black mode (your figures are placed randomly) is great fun already, but the white mode is too much of a pain to deal with, I suggest to the dev two changes: - Placement of figures should saved across the levels so you don't have to place them one by one every time. - Allow me to click the figure i want to choose rather than force me to press the keyboard button responsible for each figure. Otherwise the game could do with some price balancing but is an otherwise great proof of concept.1 found this helpful
ChessRogue : A surprisingly fun and thought provoking chess game and roguelike with tons of potential.

Thoughts:
because of the graphics i came into this game not expecting much , but boy was i wrong this game is great and obviously has a lot of thought put behind it. I've mainly played classic mode as white which has you put your pieces on the board before the enemy shows up with the end goal of getting coins(obtained by killing enemy pieces) and leaving the level with your king and whatever is left of your pieces intact...you can also kill the enemy king to move on, this loop doesn't sound like much but once you get into it you feel like a real life war commander strategically leading pieces into battle with the option of a strategic retreat.Id say its a pretty satisfying loop
Difficulty:
The game isn't too difficult but the AI is no slouch either and will do everything it can to protect its king while killing yours
minor troubles had
: understanding how to start at first, you need to press the space button to start the game after placing your pieces, i think a press space to start in the placement screen would be very helpful as well a…1 found this helpful
Fun game I’m still getting the hang of. The developer appears pretty active in terms of working on updates and gauging community interest.1 found this helpful
