Games were simpler when all you had to do was traverse a slightly repetitive landscape while beating up your local variety of stereotypical monsters. Golden Axe was a shining example of how unleashing a group of relentless murder hobos upon an unsuspecting (preferably evil) adversary works surprisingly well to enhance an evening with your friends crouched around a monitor. I really wanted to like this game, you can tell the author has a fetish for golden axe, the gameplay and level structure are very similar. The graphics are made of huge ugly pixel that look better on the background than on the characters. There's a bit of poetry in the backgrounds that look a bit like something you'd see in an old Amiga shareware, but the characters look very ugly. The music is a MIDI monstrosity with very low quality samples. The scenario, ah well, there's no scenario, no texts no dialogs no nothing, just sprites hitting each other without a pretext, it's like watching an old silent slapstick movie. The gameplay is not very good, with 2 actions and a jump (I had to find the buttons by myself). When you're in front of an enemy, it's a coin throw to know who will get to hit the other first. Sometimes the enemies just appear by dashing from the borders of the screen, potentially getting a free hit on you. The whole game, from what I've seen is rather repetitive and short (probably less than one hour for completing a run). But what really seals the thumb down is that there is no save and as soon as you've lost all your continues, you're good to start over. This is a…
