About Ciconia When They Cry - Phase 1: For You, the Replaceable Ones
This is the first chapter in newest entry When They Cry visual novel series produced by Ryuukishi07. It features HD graphics, more detailed animations, and newly created songs by many of the composers from Umineko, as well as several new additions. The Steam version is playable in both English and Japanese.
Though the world was nearly destroyed during World War III, it was saved from a nuclear winter by cutting-edge technology. One hundred years later, this eventually gave rise to the new ultimate military technology, the Gauntlet, which fascinated children all over the world. In this new era, all existing military forces would become obsolete, except for the small number of boys and girls who have what it takes to become a Gauntlet Knight...
The young are supposed to be the main characters in their own eras. But in reality, they're nothing but game pieces lined up on the board for those who are crafty and more experienced. Must these boys and girls be forced to kill each other as pieces? Who are the pieces, and who are the players? And who does the players' bidding? What victory conditions does each person have? Is it peace? War? Annihilation? Is the foretold tragedy a scheme or a delusion, the future or reality?
No.
There is no need to resist this tragedy. The job of a game piece is to dance about within the tragedy's hand.
What are the rules of the game, you ask? How hard is it? That's for us to decide, so it's none of your concern. All you people need to do is take pieces and get taken yourselves, entertaining us with the range of your emotions.
Are you listening? You don't want to misunderstand your position. You aren't my opponent. You're merely a piece that exists for my amusement. In this next game, I won't give you the privilege of being a player!

I liked it a lot, but it's dead in the water. I believe that, if finished, it could really be up there right next to Higurashi and Umineko. but it's just been way too long to expect anything out of it, On the financial side of things, the original price (about 32$ on launch) already stung enough, especially for a VN without voice acting or unique CGs with chapters meant to be sold separately. For reference, you can get Fate Stay/Night for 15 bucks right now fully voiced and with 3 complete routes, not to mention an actually noteworthy OST plus other neat details that complement the whole experience (Choices, side-stories, etc). This entry doesn't even reach the 25 hour mark on average and there are still 3 MORE chapters to buy, assuming they even come out. On the visual side of things, it’s just as impressive as the original launch of its predecessors. While it goes without saying that the quality of the sprites has gone up considerably, it's still very lacking in presentation, sometimes to a comical degree. At one point they really just plaster the GIF of a really low effort AK-47 animation plus some out of place 3D models that, more than impressive, just feel amateurish. Higura…8 found this helpful
maybe if i write a positive review phase 2 will come out sooner1 found this helpful
In the womb of spacetime, humanity's infants lie dormant. Amid a war for survival against the apocalypse itself, conflict becomes the force through which humanity discovers value in its own existence; facing the most extreme struggle ever conceived. An unfinished work, perhaps because its brutal realism and unsettling philosophy resist completion, it speaks equally to passersby and unhinged conspiracy theorists, to scholars and the starving. A universal language, impossible to complete by its very nature. Sleep peacefully, my sweet Miyao. The greatest script never written.1 found this helpful
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ I've finally read all of this phase including everything that can be unlocked and... man. We've been left with this for years... Absolutely read this VN, for sure, please, but be aware that we're all going to be sitting around waiting for the next phase like we're Vladimir and Estragon from 'Waiting For Godot'.
my friend conducted a survey in Japan asking roughly 1000 men which game yet to come out they are looking forward to the most, naturally none of them mentioned GTA 6. a large sum did mention Ciconia Phase 2. impeccable art style, impeccable story. it barely takes a few hours of reading to realize its profoundness. thank you.. The story gets super engrossing and the parallels to actual happenings are insane. The cast is large but you get a good feel for anyone. This first phase is amazing, the continuation will be a day 1 buy for me.
