Dark Heritage: Guardians of Hope

[i]Dark Heritage: Guardians of Hope[/i] is one of those earlier hidden object games, that doesn't feel like a run-of-the-mill product which the genre has several of; it's old-fashioned, but in a good way. There are plenty of minigames - some I haven't encountered before, has a unique atmosphere and is surprisingly text-heavy (relatively, within its kind). It doesn't come without problems however: the culprit's identity can be guessed fairly easily and a bug may result in being unable to progress (it can be easily avoided, if we refrain from using fast travel). I played through this game ages ago as a kid and figured I'd relive the nostalgia by picking it up on steam and checking it out once more. I gotta say, it still holds up quite well and remains a super fun hidden object puzzle game with a decent story and a cool atmosphere! I love when it leans into the more creepy aspect of the game, which it honestly maintains for the vast majority of it's length. Also, some moments were geniunely moving and made me feel for the characters even with their brief appearance. Like yeah, there's some jank with the FMV cutscenes but I also think that's kinda part of its charm in the end As a hidden object game fan I think it's one of the better ones I've played, and I'd recommend it even if you haven't played a hidden object game before. It won't be for everyone and may seem too casual for many, but I still think this game is worth experiencing if you're interested! 8/10 - Send me in with a magnifying glass and a dream and I [i]will[/i] be finding that stone

[u]Recommendation[/u]: An unintentionally funny hidden object game that features both the best cut scenes (FMV!) and the worst 3D animation in the whole Artifex Mundi catalog. [u]Critique[/u]: One of the first positive things you notice about this game is the full motion video used in the introductory cut scenes. Then you notice that the team has inserted horrible CGI into the video (when the protagonist slides the amulet out of the envelope and it's a glowing 2D computer graphic, we howled with laughter and derision). The game is set in Scotland, but none of the voice actors even attempt a Scotch accent, and [spoiler]a key character is a red-winged blackbird[/spoiler], a species native to North America. The bird appears in some cut scenes (the ones in-game are mostly 3D renders), and the animation is so hilariously bad we took video of it, so that we can watch it again for a laugh when we're feeling down. The story is not extraordinarily weird - it's just the normal amount of nonsense you expect in an Artifex Mundi game. There's ghosts, a talking bird, demons, and a slew of typical puzzles.
