About Déjà Vu: MacVenture Series

You wake up in a bathroom stall in a seedy Chicago bar with no idea of how you got here or, for that matter, who you are. You’ve dealt with the effects of benders before and this ain’t one of those. As you shake your head (hoping some memories might shake loose), you notice a ’38 hanging on the door. You check the chamber – six shells – three of them empty. That can’t be good. You gather your trench coat, stumble up the stairs and find some stiff slumped over a desk. There’s three bullets in the guy. Yeah, this is gonna be a bad day.

The original Macintosh AND Apple IIgs versions are back, featuring gumshoe detective Ace Harding! Come see where the world of first-person adventures started and experience the classic 1940′s noir game as it appeared in 1985.

Has a really fun old-school adventure game feel, with bizarrely hilarious consequences for trying stupid things. Just my style.

Déjà Vu is a fascinating relic from the very early days of point-and-click adventures. You wake up in a bar restroom with no memory and must piece together who you are and what happened — all while navigating a desktop-style interface built from several separate windows that can be moved and resized. The pacing is harsh by modern standards: instant deaths, trial-and-error and frequent reloads are part of the experience. Yet the game’s structure is logical, its atmosphere is excellent and the window-based interface is far more coherent than it first appears. It feels both ahead of its time and completely isolated from the direction the genre later took. I can’t say I loved the cliché noir plot, but the design is clever and the historical value of playing this on its original terms is surprisingly rewarding. An unusual retro experience — and worth it if you’re curious about where graphic adventures began.
