As rage climbing platformers go, this one is an adequate contribution. While it is on the easier and shorter side compared to most other popular foddian-style games, it shines in the creativity department by pulling you into a surreal painted hellscape constructed from the works of a famous Dutch painter from the 1400s. Add in some humorous monologuing from the possessed branch and some early 20th century music and you've got a bizarrely entertaining mix. The one-button movement mechanics feel limiting at first, but in typical fashion for the subgenre, you eventually learn how to work with it instead of fighting against it. To elaborate, the character has an arrow constantly rotating around his body to identify the current launch direction, which you can stop in place by holding the jump button, thus simultaneously starting to charge your jump. This means you basically need to wait for the arrow to reach the angle you prefer, then hold the jump button for a desired amount of time to control your launch power. What complicates things is that the stick very easily rolls around on surfaces despite its shape, so the gameplay becomes a balancing act between waiting for the perfect lau…

This game makes me questioning my life choices. But on a serious part - simple, yet addicting and fun to play. Love the art and how the levels feel overall. (flying away to play some more)

I went into Deamon Stick expecting a chill little indie game to unwind with. Instead, it slowly dismantled my nerves one failed attempt at a time. The mechanics seem simple at first, but the timing and precision it demands are absolutely brutal. Every time you think you’ve got the rhythm down, the game throws something new at you and suddenly you’re back to square one questioning your life choices. After a while I realized my patience (and sanity) were running dangerously low, so I handed the keyboard to my girlfriend to see if it was just me. She played for about ten minutes, stared at the screen in disbelief, and then calmly said the developer should probably be spanked for making something this cruel. Jokes aside, that’s also kind of the charm. The game is frustrating in that very deliberate indie way where you can tell the challenge is intentional and tightly designed. When you finally do pull off a tricky section, it feels incredibly satisfying. But be warned: this is not a relaxing experience.
