About despelote

despelote is a soccer game about people. Get immersed in the streets and parks of Quito through the eyes and ears of eight year old Julián. Dribble, pass and shoot your soccer ball around town, and see what happens when you kick it someone's way. Feel the city change as Ecuador comes closer than ever to qualifying for the World Cup.

Features:

  • A bittersweet and sometimes dreamy semi-autobiographical tale of youth.
  • Explore a dense town space at your leisure, full of activities, interactions, and mischief to get up to.
  • A physics-based soccer ball that feels good to kick around in a first-person perspective.
  • A vibrant world full of characters that have funny, and genuine conversations.
  • Photos and audio recorded on location in Ecuador are used to create a strong sense of place.

I think the game’s biggest problem is that it tells an extremely personal story—so personal that it feels like it was made only to preserve the memories of one person, or at best, one nation. Even a phenomenon as powerful as football can’t do much to draw the player in. On top of that, the gameplay doesn’t have much to offer either. It feels like sharing a personal memory was the first and only idea behind making this game.

I think the terms games as art gets passed around a bit too much, or maybe I am getting older and more jaded at what games people call art. But this game is actual art. I mean like, a walk through a museum art. This game is a whole exhibit. I really did not expect to feel the emotions I felt playing this game. Its moving and weirdly sad. It made me cry and I didn't even fully understand why i was crying. There was just a really powerful surge of emotions. Nostalgia. Loss. Joy I never knew. Understanding. I am not sure. All those words sort of all flat or fail to capture the feeling. Which is sort of what the devs say themselves about the game itself. They say it doesnt quite capture the feeling they were looking for. I am not sure what that feeling is, but the did something right.

Didn't listen to my mom and had a great day at the park, terrorizing everyone with a soccer ball. 10/10 would get lost in Ecuador again.

this game rules. Perfect length, fantastic soundtrack, thoughtful and interesting without stretching for depth, and looks great. Peak indie

despelote feels like nothing else I've played before. It has such a unique style and atmosphere, and I really loved how naturally it tells its story without feeling like a typical narrative game. The way the story unfolds, with some really nice surprises along the way, kept me engaged and curious about what would happen next. It's one of those games that is difficult to compare to anything else because it has such a distinct identity. Really special experience. Definitely recommend giving it a try.
