Devil's Hideout

Alright. [i]Devil's Hideout[/i] is done and dusted. This is the third Cosmic Void game I've played, and what I've come to realize is that dude is really good at writing short stories along with enough lore/world building regarding said short stories to really give these games a surprising amount of depth despite their short run times. With that in mind, this was a fun PnC adventure that weighed in at a bit less than two hours. Although looking at the cheevos, it does appear you would want to play this twice in order to see both endings, which would elevate that playtime a bit if you were so inclined. In this story, you play as Lauren, who is trying to find her sister Beth who presumably died in a car crash while the two were driving through the area represented in this story. Lauren and her friend visit a medium who informs them that Beth is not in fact dead and is trapped somewhere between life and death. And so Lauren embarks on a quest to find and rescue her lost sister. Unfortunately, the town they're in has been afflicted with a bit of that Silent Hill syndrome, and so not only is everything not as it seems, but it's also clear that a pervasive evil is attempting to shape th…

I sadly cannot recommend the game. I played it through until the end to see where it was going and if it was getting better, tried both endings, and I simply just didn't enjoy it. The graphics are top notch as usual, but the story didn't follow. The initial premise is simple but ok. The execution I found to be poor. The story just didn't have enough substance and didn't make sense, or maybe it just went over my head, I wouldn't know. It feels like a bunch of ideas put together without thinking of how they would fit. The items you find in random places that make no sense. There was this one puzzle that I figured out, but I still had to go find a guide, because apparently I hadn't clicked on all of the clues. But so what? If I figured it out without all the clues, I should still be able to proceed, but that wasn't the case, which was frustrating to find out when looking up the guide. The dialogue was my issue with Bloodnova, the jokes didn't land, stuff like that, and I can't say it was better this time around. I enjoyed this. The game has a strong atmosphere, with excellent music doing a lot of the heavy lifting. The retro-synth soundtrack sets the tone immediately and consistently, and together with the pixel art it creates a mood that really works for this kind of story. Visually it’s clear and readable, without clutter or confusion. The story itself is solid — not groundbreaking, but engaging enough to keep things moving. The focus is clearly on mood and narrative, which mostly works. Puzzles are probably the weakest part. They’re not terrible, but often feel more like straightforward gating than satisfying “aha” moments. They do their job, but don’t stand out. My only real disappointment was the ending. It isn’t offensively bad, but it does feel abrupt and somewhat lackluster, stopping without much resolution or payoff. It left me wanting a bit more closure. That said, the game was absolutely worth my time. A short, atmospheric experience with great music and presentation, and enough substance to be enjoyable despite a few rough edges.

Short, sweet and unexpectedly spooky for a Point n Click. Puzzles solutions hark back to the older days of the genre with a good sprinkling of moon logic. Pixel art is, as usual from Cosmic Void, beautiful. Probably wait for sale though - there just isn't a huge amount of game for the price of admission.

The Devil's Hideout is a rather short fully voiced horror adventure game. The pixel graphics really do their thing to create some atmosphere of uncannyness and an uneasy feeling. Especially the beginning works pretty well. Unfortunately latest in the second half of the game puzzles get very random and stuff doesn't make much sense anymore. I think that's done deliberately to make the scenario more mystical/horror-themed but personally I found it rather hilarious. The actual horror in that game happend through a hand full of some quite forseeable jump scares. It's okay for me, but I hoped for a bit more/different, especially with some of the scenes that were presented. Still a thumbs up for solid pixel graphics and voice acting together with a rather cheap price.
