DOOM 64

DOOM 64 is at best a mediocre DOOM title. I'll admit it, I didn't grow up with DOOM 64. I'm a late 2000s kid, and because of that I have no nostalgia factor for these classic games. My first DOOM game was Eternal, then 2016, then Dark Ages. I've only recently been playing through the classic games, and it's been fun! I really enjoyed DOOM 1993 and DOOM II even more so with its expansion of the arsenal and enemies. You know what I don't like? Incomprehensible level layout that requires a YouTube tutorial for any normal human being to understand and play through! That seems like a pretty basic ask, yeah? I get it, it's a classic game and they had to pad out the playtime and difficulty somehow. This is definitely the easiest of the original games if we're focusing on just difficulty and not level design. You get so much ammo that I've not once run out. I'm already on level 14 and only 2.3 hours into gameplay. If the levels made more sense, I could genuinely already be done with the game and had time to refund if I weren't going for 100%. The grandfather of FPS, enhanced for the Nintendo 64, enhanced again for the PC. An absolute pleasure to play through and can be picked up wherever you left off even if you haven’t played it continuously without feeling lost like you would with modern games. It’s amazing how well this game has aged yet still feels so current and you can really appreciate this last classical doom style game before the series went true 3D in the games to follow. I've got a weird love-hate relationship with Doom 64. On one hand, it is easily graphically my favorite of the classic Doom trilogy with exceptional atmosphere and music that no game has replicated since, but on the other hand it has some of the most frustrating secrets and level design I have ever seen in a video game PERIOD. Obviously being the Doom aficionado I am I ran this bad boy on Watch Me Die and OH MY GOD. Secrets in this game vary from 'oddly textured wall you phase through' all the way to 'shoot barrels in a specific combination BUT save one where you can run into a teleporter that opens up for like two seconds. oh, you messed up? BETTER RESTART BOY!!' WHO THE ♥♥♥♥ CAME UP WITH THESE?? And oh boy some of the level design is downright cruel and unusual. Easily the worst offender of this is 'Watch Your Step'.. Everyone always says their favorite Doom game is Eternal. It was mine too. But, after a while, I really thought. Out of all the entries in the franchise, which has really stuck with me? I gotta say, It's this one. When it comes to atmosphere, this game bleeds it. The opening intro, the demon designs, the environments, all of it. Genuinely awesome. Don't even get me started on the design for the Doom Guy in this. I love how over-the-top it looks, The grey armor mixed with his traditional green, like they bolted on extra plating to protect him, the helmet design with the radio antenna. It's all so sick, It's like ID basically said: Let's just make Doom again, but crank it all up to 11.
