DOOM 64

Doom 64, a classic in video games, is truly a great game. Its story is the least important aspect; as the creator stated, its pacing and gameplay feel excellent. I won't say anything about the graphics, because, well, it's a game from the 90s, but if the enemy designs are like those in the original Doom 1 and 2, they're good. It's a fun game, perfect for playing in an afternoon. It has its pros and cons, but that doesn't detract from the fact that it's good and fun. 8/10

Solid gunplay. Charming sprites. Clumsy—albeit respectable—attempt to emulate the Quake atmosphere within Doom using dark ambient music (which only managed to replicate the feeling of a hangover). Absolutely garbage level design. I made it as far as my familiarity with random outdated navigation rules would allow, before simply giving up and going back to play Doom 2 instead. The first pack of levels lack any flow and feature a highly disorganized, confusing structure. 99% of the tasks required to advance involve finding a random trigger that opens a path in another random room, with no apparent connection between the two. Progressing through the levels becomes a guessing game where you [i]try[/i] to figure out what just happened or what you are supposed to do next. When there is only one possible option, it’s fine; but when you have three or four at a time, you can be sure that backtracking starts to become exhausting. The best part is when you [i]have[/i] a clear path—like finding a keycard for a specific door—only to discover there is some other random prerequisite you need to meet first. It fails that task almost immediately. The visuals are functionally indistinguishable from Doom 1 and 2 — the same low-resolution sprites, the same flat geometry, the same color palette doing heavy lifting for atmosphere. Contemporary titles on the same hardware were pushing polygonal environments and detailed character models. Doom 64 offers geometry that at least doesn't clip through itself, which is a floor, not a ceiling. Below average for the era is the accurate assessment, and calling it a visual achievement for the platform requires generous application of the word "achievement." The audio situation is worse. There is no music. Not ambient sound design in place of music, not silence used deliberately — nothing.
