As a long-time admirer of Paradox Interactive’s grand strategy games, Europa Universalis: Rome – Gold Edition caught my attention not just for its setting, but for the sheer potential baked into its premise. Set in the twilight of the Roman Republic, it promises a detailed sandbox for historical drama, military conquest, and political intrigue. And for those who can get past its rougher edges, it mostly delivers. At its best, this game evokes the spirit of ancient statecraft better than most. You don’t just command armies and paint the map your color — you must also manage senates, appease aristocrats, and keep ambitious generals from turning on the Republic. The character system is robust, especially for its time. Every statesman, general, and governor comes with traits and ambitions that influence both gameplay and storytelling. I never managed to finish a campaign despite many tries. After some time, constant crashes and save corruption become inevitable. Modded, unmodded, this fix, that fix. Doesn't matter. The game is just technically broken, so don't waste your time.

I like it way more than expected. But it is terribly dated unfortunately.

Rome is emerging in the west. The clash with mediterranean superpower Carthage is inevitable. In the east, the powerful Ptolemaic Egypt is competing with the Seleucid empire for dominance, while the persian threat is lurking to consume the latter. Macedonia and Pontus are consolidating over the minor states around them. Barbarians all around constantly threaten to slay and desecrate whatever is in their way. Choose your side and navigate through this unforgiving era of ambitious republics and monarchies. Carefully balance between the state's needs and prominent characters' aspirations. Manage economy and trade to ensure sufficient cash flow and access to key goods. Monitor your social classes to achieve the desired balance between income, manpower and technological progress. Engage in diplomacy and espionage to make friends or undermine rivals. Ultimately, wage war to achieve your goals and prove your worth as the mediterranean sovereign. Old but gold.

Anybody else have this game, but reading as *really* way too small, as in 7 bits? I simply want to know if that's the case and how to solve this quirky situation... because that's just plain weird!
