Fair and Square is one of literally thousands of retro 2D platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere... and I'm not kidding. Searching for "platformers" on the Steam store page yields over 17,000 results! Is this one of the best of those? Absolutely not. Carrying some of the laziest visuals I've seen from an amateur game in literally hours (yes, so many of them look so bad, and this is no exception), we have a contentless bullet hell platformer roguelike. The story revolves around surviving relentless enemy waves and challenging bosses. You must navigate square-based arenas and upgrade your skills in a shop to customize your playstyle. Gameplay involves adapting to increasingly difficult enemy waves and strategic skill upgrades. None of this is a good idea, and none of it was implemented even remotely competently. Considering this came out in 2025 alongside games like Expedition 33 and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, it's easy to see why this was a complete and utter failure. Fair and Square is a compact action roguelike that combines bullet hell combat, platforming, and upgrade-driven progression within an intentionally simple geometric world. Developed and published by Canis Minor, it embraces squares as a central part of its visual personality rather than relying on elaborate environments or highly detailed characters. That minimalist direction works surprisingly well for a game where quickly identifying enemies, projectiles, platforms, and safe spaces is essential. Beneath the straightforward appearance is an experience centered on quick reactions, careful movement, and adapting a character build as each run becomes more dangerous. Combat is built around surviving waves of enemies while dealing with an increasing number of hazards and incoming projectiles. Staying offensive is important, but blindly concentrating on damage can quickly lead to failure. Positioning becomes increasingly significant as the screen fills with threats, requiring players to recognize attack patterns and move toward openings before escape routes disappear.
