Fallen Stars

Fallen Stars presents a compact VR science-fiction adventure built around zero-gravity movement, environmental interaction, and straightforward puzzle solving. Developed and published by FlyStar, it is an ambitious student project that focuses less on mechanical complexity and more on giving players the sensation of performing astronaut duties aboard a space station. Its limited production scope is noticeable, but the central concept has enough personality to distinguish it from conventional puzzle games. The story follows astronaut Thomas Jackson, whose investigation into an old space mission takes an unexpected supernatural or science-fiction turn. After encountering a mysterious flash of light and losing consciousness, he awakens in the past as Thomas William aboard the I.C.E.S 1 space station. This setup provides an intriguing mystery while placing the player directly into the role of an astronaut responsible for completing various duties. Fallen Stars is one of literally thousands of student projects infesting Steam. While student projects tend to be better quality than most "amateur" made games, we must still question what value such projects have for gamers. As with all student projects, this isn't really a fully fleshed out game, it's just the result of an academic exercise (in this case a competition), and as such it has much more limited value as a game than a professionally developed game would have. This student project is a basic VR tech demo crunched out in 3 months because you, the gamer, apparently don't deserve games that have a fully fleshed out delivery pipeline. Yeah, amazing, the students could push out a game in 3 months instead of taking the required time to do the job properly, but why is that good for you, the gamer? Sure, it may be possible, heck, I could drive my car using only my feet, and it's going to end in disaster. Just because something might be done, doesn't mean it should, and the primary focus for every game developer should be delivering value to gamers, through quality in design and implementation.
