About FOUNTAINS

The Fountain of Youth was hidden away. Nonetheless, it is fated that a Usurper will slay the Ageless and unearth it once more.
FOUNTAINS is an action-RPG about fighting your way through a maze-like interconnected world. You'll take the role of a hooded stranger, recently imprisoned by a tyrannical regime. Will you escape and uncover the mysteries of this war-torn empire? The world of FOUNTAINS is designed as one giant dungeon. It is a tightly packed labyrinth which twists and loops back on itself. You'll constantly find new items, powers and upgrades to unlock new parts of the world.

FOUNTAINS also features an online message system. Leave hints throughout the world to help out your fellow players, or trick them into doing something foolish!
  • Master tight, high-skilled combat and defeat punishing bosses against all odds
  • Find new abilities and tools to help you to defend yourself and to traverse the world
  • Meet many strange characters, both hostile and friendly
  • Secrets are everywhere, so always keep an eye out!

After spending some time on the game, I have a couple things to say, both positive and negative. For a game this size, the amount of content is honestly rather impressive, there's not too much but enough to keep you busy for a bit. The pixel arts, although simple in some places like the designs of the protagonist and some enemies, look stunning, which shines mostly through the looks of the world. The metroidvania aspects makes the progression and exploration somewhat enjoyable and rewarding too. But game overall still has a couple problems, main one being difficulty. Now yes, the game is SUPPOSED to be difficult, but it's genuinely nuts once you get closer to the final bosses of the game. You have little to no room for error and you have to basically memorize the bosses' patterns and master the game's combat to even have a chance of fighting them. Your equipment also doesn't match the difficulty, your sword and/or armor not matching the sudden spike of difficulty towards the end, as you're stuck with a weapon doing 36-37 damage for example. Finally, and this mostly a personal thing, I found the minimap somewhat difficult to read, as it doesn't really make it obvious where you're …

I wouldnt even describe this as metroidvania. It's just an isometric dark souls / soulslike, and it's really solid. I see a lot of reviews saying the game is too hard. It's really not if you've ever played a soulslike before. If you have a lot of experience you'll 1-2 shot most bosses. I've beaten the game, but I know I'm missing a ton of stuff that I didn't go back to once I could access certain areas, and I'm missing about half the achievements. Can probably get 15-20 hours out of this if you are a completionist, more if you struggle with bosses.

I came across this Game randomly and it's a GEM. Whoever needs a challenging Souls like Game but also enjoys Indie games like Hyper light drifter - you'd possibly enjoy this game too.

the first boss has absolutely insane mixups, might be the hardest in the game for you like it was for me love the rest of it though, super fun and fluid to play

I'm so glad that I stumbled across this game, and I'm not sure how it went under my radar since it ticks so many boxes for the types of games I enjoy. It managed to recreate that magical feeling I had playing the original Zelda for NES when I was a kid, and played similarly with its top-down perspective and sprawling map. The world was a joy to explore and there were many surprising ways that it interconnected and allowed for teleporting if you took the time to uncover every nook and cranny. Adding so many Dark Souls elements, including the bonfire-style respawn with fountains, the player-created message system that could range from tips to trolls to outright poetry, and the tools and equipment you could find really enhanced the experience. I do enjoy the Metroidvania style map where you can mark things yourself, which was essential since the game doesn't mark anything for you - NPCs, shops, dungeons, caves, treasure, teleports, etc. I do feel like the difficulty isn't balanced though, and that's probably the only reason this game isn't getting the praise that it deserves. I managed to defeat all of the bosses and complete the game, but the last three in particular took perseveran…

they did alot of things right with this game but I cannot recommend due to how janky it all is. play at your own risk, the bosses aren't very hard they just have zero openings and never stop attacking. wish I could like this game
