About Hand of Doom

An apprentice wizard, seeking always to gain more power, enters the service of a powerful sorcerer to do his bidding. Now, trapped in eternal servitude, you are sent on a quest across the planes of existence to seek out and slay the Doomlords who preside over reality itself, all in the name of preventing universal disaster.

THE MASTER OF DEATH

The master of death has been resurrected. The powerful wizard that holds your contract signed in blood can no longer survive from the power they siphon from entities they've bound all across the planes of existence. To become more powerful than death itself, he sends his army of cultists to slay the entities and amass enough power to dethrone a god.

SLAY OR BEFRIEND

You don't have to honor the contract. In the different planes of existence, you can choose to slay or befriend the shackled entities, changing the conclusion of your story. Will you be a ruthless justicar, meting out pain and death? Or will you instead find common ground and friendship? The choice is entirely up to you in this doom metal and dark fantasy-inspired world.

✦ AI summary

Players praise this retro FMV game for its charming 90s aesthetic, quirky acting, creative spell-casting mechanics, and perfect pacing that ends before overstaying its welcome. However, the game suffers from notable bugs and soft-locks that can render it unplayable, with some players reporting game-breaking issues that force restarts after hours of playtime, making it a risky purchase until these technical problems are addressed.

I would not recommend this. I bought this because the art style looked cool, and it is, but this unfortunately wasn’t enough to keep me interested. The gameplay involves walking from one location to the next and talking to characters in order to learn where to go next and learning new spells to unlock access to new areas. While some of the NPC dialogue is pretty funny and the spell animations are pretty cool, the gameplay itself bored me quite quickly. Combat is pretty much clicking “use” on your weapon or casting a spell while close enough to the enemy, then backing up when they swing at you. This, figuring out which spell to use to access a new areas, along with walking and talking to NPCs is pretty much the whole game as far as I can tell. It involves a lot of backtracking and using new spells to access areas previously inaccessible, which really wore me out and ate up a few hours during which I found myself bored. Nice job to the creator on making something unique and visually appealing, but due to the gameplay itself I wouldn’t recommend this other than maybe if you are curious to see the art style and laugh at the writing. Music is well done also.

A fun time with plenty of B-movie style silliness - takes about 6-8 hours to complete Hand of Doom is, at heart, an action adventure game harkening back to a DOS-ish era - complete with crunchy graphics, clunky controls, and lots of silly FMVs. The play loop is what you'd expect from an adventure game: wander forth, defeat enemies, and talk to people until you find an item (or spell) that will help you progress; repeat. Aside from inventory, Hand of Doom has a magic system that consists of saying magic words in order to cast - the game does a good job of making many staple spells have several uses and finding a new one is exciting every time. Hand of Doom is a game that knows exactly how seriously to take itself - it knows what it is and it stays perfectly true to that. It sets the tone, but also has fun with itself. I think you'll know if this is a game for you from the first time you see the UI and turn left and right and throw a punch. It's a little tricky to know who to recommend it to - enjoyers of "bad" movies and weird controls will probably have a good time, especially if they're used to older adventure games. Personally, I thought it was a hoot. I got my copy as…
