Do you like platformer shooters? Do you love memory-games and demand for positioning? Do you like the unforgiving difficulties of older DOS games? Do you like retro visuals and SFX ? Or are you looking at this because it reminds you of Dangerous Dave, and you remember playing that game? ( and you also remember CGA / EGA graphics ) ... in that case, this rather low-priced game might just be for you! ( In any other case, you might want to familiarize yourself with other platformer games. This game demands patience, and may inflict carpal tunnel. )1 found this helpful
This game is a truly grueling experience to beat and even more of one to 100%, but I love it SO much. Six playable characters spread among three main classes which all have really unique gameplay between them, a bunch of useful upgrades that change up gameplay well, and six nicely paced levels to get through with two short bonus levels. The Beast class is easily my favorite because of the power, speed, and Bloodborne-style health regen. The movement and combat feels nice and fresh as opposed to some indie games which keep archaic details of old games out of habit. The DOS-styled pixel art and music are both great, and give the setting a great deal of atmosphere. Some things do feel rough, sadly. The gunner class' dodge is the weakest and least useful of the three classes because it can't work as an attack or be used in midair, which hurts their versatility a lot. Missing enemies, items, or secret paths that can be difficult to find can ruin challenge runs of levels which, in later levels, can require an hour or more on top of encyclopedic knowledge of the game, and these challenge runs are also necessary for extra silver to buy upgrades with. This game will be a joy to play if you …
They have shot themselves in the foot with the souls-like/nes era complexity with this one. This could've been so much fun but the same level grind is too slow and not interesting enough to be a rewarding souls like experience. Even original dangerous dave felt less tedious. Even though you slooowly gey better and progress, it felt it was made unnecessarily obstructed and the pacing was so tedious with so little reward that i did not feel like coming back to it after ~10hours of gameplay and the only feeling i had while thinking of turning it back on were "ugh nah that's gonna be boring"
this game rules so hard. it's one of the single unlaziest games ever made. everything is high effort and each successive level steps it up. do you like beautiful, maximal pixelart? do you like well-conceived 2D action platforming? there are really only five core levels but they'll take you a bit to get through. each class -- of which there are three -- play these levels completely differently so there's a lot to master here. i find it funny how people call this game unfair. it's an MS-DOS throwback but it really just isn't in terms of difficulty. is it hard? hell yeah it is but it has a lot of modern ideas like checkpoints and class-specific defensive mechanics. i don't want to say "git gud" and yet. i'm sorry but do we recall the days of actually cheap bosses? limited lives? when games were designed around getting players to drop as many quarters in them as possible? when memory was limited so games were horridly frustrating and/or forced players to entirely repeat brutal sections of the game in order to complete them? can we please get real? i get the feeling a lot of people complaining about the difficulty here simply have no notion of what a truly unfair game is. go give G…
I rarely write reviews, but this one is so exceptionally good that I just had to. This is a game driven by a passionate developer with a clear vision of exactly what they wanted and it shows. First, the gameplay: Satisfying combat with polished mechanics and interesting enemies that reward good decisions and smart usage of the character's abilities. The three character classes are all interesting and feel very different from each other. The secrets are fun to find and provide upgrades that feel useful without trivializing content. It's a challenging game that doesn't shy away from sending you back when you die. Some may view that as a con but in my opinion it amplifies the satisfaction you get when finally reaching the next checkpoint. My only complaint is that if you try to jump down through a platform right after attacking, you may perform a normal jump on accident. This is probably an easy fix for the developer and regardless there is a workaround of holding down+jump during the attack to buffer a jump down instead of mashing it. Graphics: The EGA 16-color palette may not everybody's cup of tea, but it was absolutely pushed to the extreme limit here with lots of cool e…
