Eldritchvania is widely praised for its hand-drawn art style, atmospheric Lovecraftian setting, clever puzzles, and tight boss battles, with many players impressed by the quality for a free game. The main complaint centers on the voice gibberish audio, which some find grating and difficult to adjust since there's no dedicated voice volume slider, though opinions on this mechanic vary. Some minor frustrations exist around hidden items and non-linear progression requiring backtracking, but the compact map and rewarding exploration generally keep these from being major issues.
"Eldritchvania" is a great 2D-Metroidvania with an uniquely drawn artstyle, great lovecraftian setting and heavy focus on investigation/puzzles and tight boss battles. You play an elderly scottish scholar on his quest to save his son who got lost on his expedition investigating a subterranean eldritch civilisation. The spellcasting/madness mechanic is solid, the exploration is rewarding, albeit some items are quite well hidden (got a guide for this once/twice). The progression is all over the place, so expect backtracking, but luckily the map is very compact. The whole presentation seems a little quirky at first, but it soon manages to create a dense and uncanny atmoshpere! A great and unique title full of heart and a "faithful" lovecraftian experience! You can't go wrong, it is free, although it is worth much more!1 found this helpful
Really solid game, I feel like a cheater for not paying for this, congrats to the team that developed this and made it free. Music is good, graphics as well, game has good puzzles.1 found this helpful
Hand drawn art style, challenging puzzles and platforming... i've only just begun my journey but I this game already delivers... and for FREE. You aren't going to find any better bang for your buck than this.1 found this helpful
The gibberish noise used for people talking is possibly the worst sound I've ever heard in a game. There's also no instant text option or volume slider just for voices, so your only options are to mute all sound effects or suffer through it. I have no idea why the devs thought it was a good idea to put that noise in the game, but it sucks hard enough to ruin what would otherwise be a decent game. I'll note that I typically really like it when devs use gibberish when characters talk in games like this. There's a huge difference between gibberish that sounds good and gibberish that sounds bad, though.
A fun excursion.
