Hobo: Tough Life – A Review by Someone Who Thought “Survival Game” Meant Zombies, Not Rent Score: 8.5/10 – “I came for memes, stayed for the existential dread.” Hobo: Tough Life is what happens when a survival game decides crafting arrows is too easy and instead makes you craft dignity from spare change and leftover soup. Set in the fictional Central European city of Praslav, you play as a homeless person trying to survive hunger, cold, hostile NPCs, and the slow realisation that capitalism is the final boss. First impressions Graphically, it’s gritty but effective: dirty streets, run-down buildings, and an atmosphere that constantly whispers, “Winter is coming, and you are not prepared.” It’s not trying to be a glossy AAA title; it’s trying to make you feel the chill of sleeping behind a train station, and it succeeds a bit too well. Gameplay loop Your daily routine quickly becomes: Beg for coins while trying to maintain eye contact but not seem “too suspicious”. Scavenge for food, clothes, and anything that isn’t nailed down. Let me preface this review by saying this game is so fun with friends. There are not many of the economic slum survival games like this, and barely any that are co-op. I love Obenseuer and always wished this game work get to the polish and quirkiness of Obenseuer. Would of loved to see more animations, more interiors, changing hobo models based on cloths, more ways to earn money like mailing scams/drug production/brewing/maybe dedicated street vending stalls you could set up. Or maybe even being able to build little tent camps anywhere you want and don't get harassed by non-homeless society. Would also been great to be able to tailor the difficulty settings (I like hardcore, but don't like not being able to store stuff in hideout and not lose all your stuff on death). But unfortunately as much fun as this game can be in co-op, it still need more TLC and the dev seems to have abandoned it. They claim to not have abandoned it, but that was like 3 years ago and they clearly moved on to KVARK. No true solo player mode, it is either hosting or joining a game. If I set my game to only allow 1 person, the game does not have any ability to pause, which wouldn't be as big of a deal if your character wasn't constantly dying from everything. So if I have to take a bathroom break IRL, my character just stands there getting stinkier and sicker. No tutorial mode. There are a lot of things that you do that make sound effects like it negatively affects your character, but there doesn't appear to be any explanation of those. When attempting to play the game with friends, they were constantly booted from my server for no apparent reason and when it reconnected, any progress they had made with their characters was removed. Other games attempted with the same cadre of folks have not any issues with connectivity. As a minor thing, the music is very repetitive. I am disappointed because the premise is exciting and interesting but the execution is sloppy. Recommend saving your money and passing on this.

Tough life

Deeply unfun game, normal mode is wildly too easy and hardcore mode is hard in all the wrong ways. Each system reinforces one anothers' penalties until you're suddenly dying from everything all at once, and crafting/building takes ten times what it ought to take. Meanwhile on normal mode, you're just kind of allowed to succeed on everything without trying. Feels like the dev doesn't understand how to make a satisfying difficulty curve. I would've possibly enjoyed a middle difficulty where survival is harder, but you don't circle the drain so fast with very little recourse. Balancing all the systems should be fun, but between the ludicrous crafting requirements and lack of anything to do with most crafting items most of the time, Hardcore suffers deeply from forbidding you from having a storage chest for no discernable reason. Normal is just too easy to be fun; it's simply a slow game with no satisfying challenge.
