Very very lovely game!
Very fun base game and some of the greatest mods I've ever played on a game, but the mods are great cause of the mechanics and the game they mod. So if you want my 2 cents, play the base game first, then try some mods. But all up to you.
TLDR: Amazing - but buy it on GoG if you want it to run stable. Homeworld and Homeworld 2 are masterpieces. Unparalleled games from Relic at their peak. Shame about HW3. That was truly dreadful. This collection is all you need. And Cataclysim (or 'emergence' as it's now known for some reason). I recommend these games highly (plus the remastered collection also contains the classic HW and HW2 if you really want to go full nostalgia). BUT - I don't recommend buying this on Steam. It crashes and freezes all the time, and for some reason the UI settings don't work properly in-game. I tried everything from BIOS updates to disabling steam overlays, etc. and this game just kept freezing up and crashing and giving GPU driver timeout errors. Frustrated and fed up with trying to find GPU settings or other fixes I picked the collection up on sale on GoG - and it works perfectly. No crashes, nothing. Played fully half the way through the remastered HW campaign in a single sitting and not one issue.
As someone who has been playing Homeworld since the original release, I have mixed feelings about this Remastered Collection. While the updated visuals and overall presentation are nice, I feel that the remastered version has lost some of the atmosphere and charm that made the original Homeworld so special. The original had a unique mood and feeling that, for me, the remaster doesn't quite capture. That said, it's great that the original versions are included in the collection as well. Being able to play both the classics and the remastered versions makes this collection worthwhile, especially for longtime fans. Overall, I'd give it 6.5/10. The remaster is a solid way to experience Homeworld, but personally, I still prefer the atmosphere of the original.
