About House of Moiré
House of Moiré presents a marriage of op-art and immersion. In this linear, non-game and atmospheric piece, the visitor advances through rooms of an otherworldly home, choosing where to pause, look and listen as the surrounding architecture and sound objects reveal themselves.

House of Moiré is the culmination of various iterations of Moiré, a series of A/V works that explore fascinations with psycho-acoustics, sound spatialization, sensory illusion, and real-time virtual environments. Experimental and surreal, House of Moiré invites a temporary escape into an alternative space. It is made with custom audio software, depth cameras, motion capture, and interactive design principles.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Chloe Alexandra Thompson and Matthew Edwards (aka aesthetic.stalemate) are interdisciplinary artists and collaborators. Chloe is a composer and sound designer interested in the physicality of sound and mediation of technology in installation and performance, and Matthew blends installation art, performance and virtual reality.
An electronic music and digital arts festival for 23 years, now navigating the artistic possibilities of VR.
Experienced on the Meta Quest 2
You can view my impressions & gameplay here: https://youtu.be/zDPoXjYijQo This is experimental abstract art for VR with shifting optical patterns & audio-visual design in mind. As such, this experience isn't for everyone. If you enjoy experimental art exhibits made for VR, then you may enjoy this. It's about 10 minutes long, however, it can last much much longer if you really take your time to enjoy the exhibit. In fact, I recommend you take a lot longer than 10 minutes because you will miss a lot if you don't stop and take in the art. Unfortunately, I do think there is an issue with the audio. I don't know the artists personally, but I can't imagine they intended the audio mix in this game as it currently stands. It just seemed like a mess at times with certain audio being too loud and it just sounded muddy. I think the audio is meant to sound crisp & clear with good spatial audio to really make the audio-visual standout from this experience. I hope there is an update soon that fixes the audio. Game / app is running on the Unity Engine. On my RTX 3080, I was getting steady 90 fps. You can only control going forward or going back or look…7 found this helpful
House of Moire is not a game, but an immersive abstract art experience where you get to move slowly through an evolving gallery of moire-inspired graphics animations, coupled with experimental sound design. The audio is immersive and presented in spatial audio so be sure to wear headphones. You can only move forwards and backwards at a slow pace, so be sure to look behind you as much as you look ahead. The whole experience takes about 10 minutes, but I encourage you to pause and experience the art and sound for longer. It definitely can put you in a hypnotic state. Wonderful job to the creators and excited to have more weird art experiences for VR!4 found this helpful
If you like psychedelic VR experiences this wont disappoint. Well worth the low price. I took my time, going backwards a few times as it seemed to change on the reverse. I can see myself revisiting in the future. A+2 found this helpful
I appreciate this kind of experiences reminding of abstract cinema in the first decades of '900. VR adds the feeling of immersion and spatiality. However the idea is not well implemented, in the actual state the experience is poor. It suffers from the lack of 3D spatial sound. Sounds are not localized according to the position and movements of objects and shapes around your head. Abstract objects and shapes are built with flat thin lines or stripes, they have no depth, that's a big mistake in VR. Objects and shapes have quite no textures and colors are flat. The biggest defect is the lack of light management. Rendering of light is the most important feature in VR. No light sources, no environmental lights, no volumetric effects, no occlusions, no shadows. Materials have no light properties, no reflections, maybe just a bit of flat scattering. VR development is a new frontier, very few can master it actually. One and only direction of the flow of images is not the best choice; in VR you need to feel surrounded. I would like some objects and shapes to go around my head, with spatial sound. Why not drop the user into a chasm or black hole every once in a while, like Alice in the whi…1 found this helpful
As soon as you enter House of Moiré, you discover a universe with psychedelic visuals and intriguing sounds. The mixture of geometric shapes, antico-futuristic architecture, and optical effects alter our perceptions while the sound work transports us even further into this parallel world. As I progressed, I had the impression that a mystery was hidden in the different rooms. Perhaps someone (or something) was observing me... This sensation makes me want to explore House of Moiré even more. I hope that the developers are working on new features with interactions that will enhance the sense of mystery even further...1 found this helpful
I was worried I'd gotten too high, but turns out i was just too high enough.
