About Hunt the Muglump
Hunt the Muglump is a retro-inspired dungeon crawling adventure where you must brave the dangers of a dark dungeon in order to slay the Muglump by shooting it with an arrow. The Muglump is a horrific, greedy beast that can and will consume anything and anyone it can get its hands on. Along the way watch out for bottomless pit traps and giant bats that can carry you to other parts of the dungeon that may lead to certain doom. To play the game, players must explore the dungeon. When they enter a room, they will receive on screen messages indicating if danger is close. Using these clues, they must determine if one of the nearby rooms contains a muglump and fire an arrow into it, slaying the beast. After slaying all muglumps in the dungeon, players should return to the entrance to successfully complete the game.

Hunt the Muglump is a 2D retro pixel top down [strike]dungeon crawler[/strike]... wait, no, it's not. It looks like it's trying very hard to be a dungeon crawler, but there's no RPG elements to this game. It's more accurately described as a block/pathing puzzle game as you move around on a static path/grid and must guess whether to shoot into an adjacent room to kill any muglumps that may or may not be in there. Before I wade too deeply into the review here, I will admit to being somewhat confounded by this game being developed by Old School Games. They have another game on Steam, God Mode, which is a console ported 3D third person co-op arena wave survival shooter, with reasonably high production values. It flopped, but it was clearly produced by a professionally staffed and competent production studio. Now, Hunt The Muglump is below Unity Asset flip in terms of quality, like, it's really bad (which is why I don't think this is an asset flip, necessarily). So what happened here? This is like if Bioware had only made two games, Mass Effect and then a couple of years later, Flappy Bird. Like, what gives. There's something suspicious here. This is a nice little dungeon crawler - straightforward controls & game play, basic toonish graphics and a good soundtrack. I haven't gone to the highest difficulty yet, the lower levels give you a great feel for the play, with larger maps & more MugLumps as you progress. If you enjoy retro-style crawlers (think Temple of Apshai, or a VERY stripped down version of NetHack), I highly recommend. This is well worth the cost - I'll be firing this up regularly.1 found this helpful
