About JEF

Awaken as an alien. How did you get here? No idea! What's your name? No one knows! Explore the strange colonies of a spa-cult civilization to find your way home. Unravel cosmic jokes, befriend digital ghosts, and discover what “you” means in a universe built on absurdity. In JEF, you’re dropped into the middle of a cosmic walkabout that went off the rails centuries ago. The world is beautiful but meaningless — alien cities glitter with purpose that you'll never comprehend. Through exploration and interaction, maybe you can piece together who you are and what you're doing here. Or maybe not! The world hates you! It happens. You don't come here as a conqueror. You are a visitor. A drifter. A wanderer. And here you'll find a bathhouse cathedral. A religious resort. A simulation of life. You desperately want to understand every encounter but it feels like you're overhearing a half-jumbled secret instead. At its heart, JEF is an existential comedy about memory, faith, and the weirdness of being alive. You’re a tourist in your own consciousness, just trying to laugh before the void logs you out.

JEF is probably one of the weirdest 3D Platformers I've ever played. Graphically it looks kind of terrible. The colors are washed out or too bright, and at times it feels like you're in a kind of painting that has incorporated so much randomness you're not even sure anything is real. Character models of the JEFs are good. They look very cool. Character models for humans look like that waxy lifeless model that was all the rage in like 2010. Heck, the platforming portions aren't even very good. The camera angles can be terrible. It can be difficult to jump from platform to platform or onto stairs. There's a racing level where you can get stuck at the edges of tunnels. There's a "fly through the circles" portal traversal area that lasts for a minute each time. It's difficult due to controls being a bit wonky here. Things just get progressively stranger as you go. There's a considerable amount of humor woven into the story, but that humor might not be for everyone. If you're not enjoying the humor in the beginning of the game you probably won't enjoy it later. Surprisingly I had a fantastic time with the game. Were there some frustrating platforming moments? Yep. Di…

JEF is essential. There is no other way to put it. Look, I get that this game looks easy to dismiss, but skipping this one is a mistake. It's less than an hour and half long. It's surreal, funny, thrilling, and soul affirming. This is gaming as fine dining but it's actually affordable lol.

I felt like some of the bits went on longer than they needed to and the beginning area felt very confusing. Overall I'm still glad it was made because it made for an....interesting? experience.
