About JPN Burst

JPN Burst is an ambitious indie game that compiles 90+ Japanese characters into easy lessons and true test-your-skill challenges.

Learn Japanese

The Japanese writing system is composed of Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji. Instead of A to Z, Hiragana letters range from あ (a) to ん (n). Katakana will also range from ア (a) to ン (n). You will use the English equivalent (Romaji) to type Hiragana and Katakana. You'll get 12 lessons and 4 tests for Hiragana. You'll also get 12 more lessons and 4 tests for Katakana. You can approach either one at any time.

Test Your Knowledge

Test: 15+ kana. Short time windows. Relentless patterns. Can you type it fast enough under pressure?

Type on your Command

Take full advantage of your keyboard! You won't have to wait your turn in this real-time gameplay.

Extraordinary Tools

No kana is too difficult. You can get free hints. You can mash your keyboard until it works. You can do both, making you unstoppable.

Multiple Save Files

Some apps restrict you to one account, meaning only one save file. Some games restrict to just three save files. JPN Burst offers MANY save files, so you, your spouse, your family, and maybe even the future you can enjoy a personal experience.

New Game+

Once you have learned the characters, it is not enough to just know them. Without practice, your memory will scatter the hard-learned lessons to the back of your brain. To account for that, you can replay the game with its harder difficulties.

If you're already familiar with Hiragana and Katakana and feel like you still mess up sometimes and want something to practice with. This is a good way to do it. I was feeling rusty on katakana so I grabbed this to do some drills and then went ahead and cleared out the hiragana sets as well. The one annoying thing was that everytime you beat a lesson/test it sends you back to the menu to select between school/home/whatever books you've bought instead of just bringing you back to the page you had been before. I do like that you can navigate without having to use your mouse for the most part though, makes it pretty quick to get back in. That said, there were definitely surprises when I went to check out what else was in the game. I bought the "Farm" book not knowing what it was then was surprised to be tossed into a challenge mode that included Kanji, it took a little bit to realize that I had to open the book while in the challenge to play "match the kanji" to what was being shown to me. Neat, but unexpected. I found myself thinking "I wish there was a study mode" a few times, but I think that's what no-pressure mode is. Overall, for a few dollars you're looking at a decent drilli…

A good Japanese learning game/software. I got it for free and I don’t know anything about Japanese language. Within an hour, I gained my basic knowledge about Japanese language and letters. The game is fairly challenging and will actually help you think harder, hence it will actually exercise your brain muscle about the language.
