Kong: Survivor Instinct

Looks good. Story is mediocre. (I'm being generous here) Exploration is okay. Puzzles are easy. Combat is a source for frustration. (until you discover bullets appear out of thin air when needed) Titan combat would be fun to watch if you weren't too busy pixel jumping to get out of the way. Too short. It has spiders. Watching a full playthrough on YT is more fun.

Wow - why all the negativity? having FINALLY finished the game I have to say that overall I had a blast. "THE GREAT BRIDGE" sequence near the end was a bit irritating, but I made it easier by turning vsync off (so the game responded to my actions quicker) and increasing the "aim guide" that I hadn't realised was a thing until I went looking for settings to speed up rendering. TBH I'm not sure that the aim guidance improved my aim at all, I'm just relieved to have made it out alive. Fans of the Monsterverse should pick it up during a sale.

This is a very conditional recommend, as overall, while I enjoyed the game and would give it a 6/10 personally, it's got quite a few things holding it back from being a universal recommend to fans of 2D Metroidavania-lites, including the fact that you absolutely need to be a fan of the source material to enjoy it. Also recommend at $15 or less only. Basically, this is a "sequel" to Godzilla VS Kong, while utilizing Jonah and his faction as the primary antagonists from KotM. The story isn't particularly engaging, the voice acting is pretty rough and it's short, but for Monsterverse fans, what's going on and why will be neat, if only for adding another Kaiju to the family. The gameplay is rough and clunky; you can argue some of it is because you play as a relatively "normal" dad trying to save his daughter, but it doesn't excuse how stiff it feels. Imagine the combat/platforming from Arkham Origins Blackgate as a comparison, but possibly even more stiff. Level design is basic with no optional areas(just optional singular rooms with upgrades), basic puzzles involving sliding boxes, switches and platforming. The puzzles platforming bits are fun. As is the exploration. The combat against humans is annoying. But the chase sequences are utterly infuriating. You're fightinh the controls through an obstacle course with poor signposting and one mistake means back to the steart. Dont buy it, watch a walkthrough
