Definitely not a bog standard roguelike, Ma Vie En Rogue has a very different presentation around a few core gameplay elements that you'll probably recognize, so it's still pretty easy to dive in. The conceit is interesting, you choose a map style which affects the enemies you'll face and the environment you'll be in. Combat is straightforward but good positioning is still important. I'm hoping the mechanics get expanded as EA proceeds, but big updates are still incoming, so I'm excited.8 found this helpful
This roguelike is truly beautiful even in an unfinished state. I wish I could do more to support its creators.1 found this helpful
It's Rogue!!! The game that started many of us on the path of glory.. But rather than just re-hashing the same format like so many other games have done. Ma Vie En Rogue adds the third dimension. You can play it top-down in an almost-like-Rogue fashion, or first person like Dungeon Master / Bards Tale / Stonekeep. But better than that, you can put the top-down as a minimap to play it in First Person, but keeping your bearings... This truly is the best way to play it in my honest opinion. As it's (essentially) Rogue, it works in pretty much exactly the same way. But while other games like Moria, Angband, Qud or one of the other Roguelikes take a very faithful approach to recreating the wonder of the original, Ma Vie pares things back to the original experience, but expands it in technological ways, rather than gameplay. The original didn't give you everything on a plate... Every "run" was a constant rolling of the dice against the RNG.. Sometimes you lost a little.. Sometimes you lost a lot. Where Ma Vie really shines, though, is the varied difficulty system. Rogue was punishing. It'd kill you stone dead if you didn't know just how risky certain endeavours were., or…1 found this helpful
