About Machiavelli the Prince

In Machiavelli you can explore the old world, becoming rich through cunning and risky trade routes. Commerce, politics and cunning are the paths to success.
  • Hire mercenaries to force open cities that refuse to trade with you.
  • Raid your opponents'' caravans
  • Buy church offices for your own
  • Bribe senators in the Venetian halls of power
  • Assassinate the Doge and take his place
  • Nominate yourself for Pope
  • Excommunicate your foes
  • Call crusades on the infidels ... or anyone you don't like
Claim the title Merchant Prince and leave your mark on the RenaissanceDemo coming soon!"A prince must act like a beast...a fox to recognize traps, and a lion to frighten off wolves."
It's 15th century Europe – resources are bountiful and deception is king. It's the perfect time to execute your plan for world domination. Manipulate military, political and religious powers using bribery, piracy and assassination. Acquire wealth by trading with over 40 cities. But plan your strategy carefully, young prince. Because every move can mean the difference between exaltation and excommunication.
Set during Machiavelli's time in Europe when city-states reigned, this multiplayer strategy game pits you against three other human or A.I. controlled traders in Venice, competing to amass the most wealth and influence by game's end. To achieve lasting fame for your family name, you must build a globe-spanning trading empire with caravans and fleets, always looking to buy low and sell high in the world's commodity markets.
  • Play on a historic map of Medici-era Italy or a procedurally generated map for a new exploration experience
  • Adjustable starting resources and A.I. strength for each player
  • Create and modify trade routes for your fleets and caravans with a detailed and intuitive interface
  • Bribe cardinals and senators to sway papal politics to your family's favor
  • Contend with pirates, brigands and storms along your trade routes
  • Rule by love and by fear: patronize the arts to raise your popularity, or undercut your rivals by assassinations, arson and slander

A great re-make of one of my favorite old-school games. I remember playing this via email back when I had AOL.

Recommended — A Renaissance Strategy Gem With Rough Edges Machiavelli the Prince is one of those rare strategy titles that still feels singular decades later. It drops you into the bustling, treacherous world of Renaissance trade and politics, where every caravan route, commodity price shift, and diplomatic overture can ripple outward in surprising ways. The game’s greatest strength is how seamlessly it blends economic simulation with genuinely Machiavellian statecraft: bribing senators, buying church offices, influencing elections, sabotaging rivals, and occasionally resorting to darker methods. Few games capture the feeling of running a living, opportunistic mercantile empire quite like this one. That said, the interface absolutely shows its age. Expect clunky menus, limited feedback, and a learning curve that feels very 1990s. Reading the manual is a must. But once you push through that initial friction, the underlying systems reveal a depth and atmosphere that modern strategy games rarely attempt. Every decision matters, and the world reacts in ways that feel both logical and delightfully cutthroat. If you enjoy deep economic sims, political scheming, or historical strategy …

Classic game. Granted the Autosave game feature does not work. I'm not holding the old plague bug against them, that where you say "no don't visit" but as the game cycles thru your trade groups, it trades anyway. I did forget how fun it was to crush your opponents by cutting off access to every single city / town on the map. I can't wait to play it another time with a random map. That's a bit more challenging since the goods available are scattered across the map, making for interesting trade routes.
