A+ Tier | 13/15 TL;DR: I love this game. I never expected it to be this good. I had so much fun merging my Arcanes (Demons) and fighting with them. The only reason I can’t rate it higher is, because it feels a bit too much like a copy of another game. I would like to see more unique ideas. Besides that it feels very polished. I looked for a game with gameplay like SMT, because I played all of them since 3DS and Atlus unfortunately focusses more on the Persona series. So, I ended up here. And it really is very very much like SMT. From the SMT games I played, it felt closest to SMT Devil Summoner Soul Hackers.
Combat
I played everything on hard difficulty. It is very good balanced and I had a nice amount of challenge. It feels like hard is the default difficulty. Otherwise, it would be too easy. The MP cost are right – you can use a lot moves, but will run out over time (not like Etrian Odyssey where you just can do three good moves to get empty). But sometimes I got randomly one-hitted. There are many game systems, like stats, ailments and range, which makes combat very interesting. I like it very much, that you have a shortcut for every move you can make …2 found this helpful
Very meat and potatoes SMT like. Story and characters are set dressing, and that's kind of how I like it. Pure dungeon crawl, nice monster designs, and fun gameplay1 found this helpful
This is a good one. Pretty impressive as a Shin Megami Tensei clone made in RPG maker. First person dungeons complete with traps feels like it could have been made by Atlus themselves. The negotiation system is a little light, and really unnecessary, but that's actually my only complaint, this was really fun to play and get all the achievements. My favorite knock off Persona is Mike.
Good game. There are some problems, but these are nothing that wouldn't have been solved by a bigger budget and/or more playtesting. The dungeons are exactly what you expect from the old DRPG styles SMTs and SHs. If you're hungry for more SMT and Soul Hackers, just get this. There's no debate to be had. I hate the stat increase on level passives, but I can live with it. Protip: recruit and fuse multiple Pangus (early level 3 demon) as soon as possible.
Makai Agito can best be described as "Baby's First Megaten" following the plot from "Re/Member". With that description in mind, this game is pretty fantastic with the right approach. The weak points are easily overcome by it's strengths and I enjoyed my time here. The plot is that you're reporter friend invites you to investigate a local legend about a "Witching Hour" curse... aka people disappearing without a trace every few years. But as the hour comes to pass, monsters walk the streets and the memories of the past hours return. Track down and destroy the dismembered body of an ancient witch or you'll awaken tomorrow with the dead gone without a trace. The writing itself is passable, but it really doesn't need to be more than that. Dungeon Crawls are about the mazes and the journey and the plot is just interesting enough to keep me moving forward. The gameplay is oldschool SMT or Persona. Walk around in first person mazes and fight enemies with preschool-tier element matching. There's no press-turn or all-outs/knock downs... simply extra damage if you match the enemies weakness. It's honestly a nice change of pace because, with one exception, I felt like I could just enjo…
