New York Rat Simulator, developed and published by Firebug Games, is a small-scale open-world experiment that embraces absurdity and chaos rather than realism or polish. It invites players to inhabit one of the least glamorous yet most notorious creatures of urban legend—a New York City rat—and to wreak havoc across a stylized version of the metropolis. The premise is delightfully ridiculous: you, a lone rat, must scurry through the city collecting slices of pizza, feeding your strength, and ultimately growing large enough to fulfill the will of the mythical Rat King. The game treats this ludicrous idea with just enough seriousness to make it compelling, while maintaining an undercurrent of parody that acknowledges its own rough edges. It isn’t a game of complex systems or intricate simulation—it’s a playground of nonsense, meant to evoke laughter, confusion, and the occasional burst of chaos as you terrorize the streets. At its core, the gameplay is simple and deliberately repetitive. You begin as a small rat navigating a compact, open-world city block filled with pedestrians, vehicles, trash cans, and of course, pizza slices. The mechanics revolve around scavenging, growing, and…

I enjoyed the brief experience, very fun concept, but it's been basically dead in the water since 2022.

If you size up, bump into a pedestrian to knock them down, then ram into their limp body the right way, you'll get launched a hundred feet into the air into an unfinished area. It's kinda fun running around outside the boundaries where you aren't supposed to be. Other than that, not much to the game right now. You run around and collect pizza, eventually growing bigger, presumably shortening your already limited lifespan because pizza is all you can eat. You can ram yourself into cars, moving them which is kinda funny. I tried pushing the limp bodies of people into the roads to see if they would get run over, but unfortunately and unlike the real New York City, the cars, which are driver-less if you look closely, will carefully avoid running people over which was a little disappointing. Maybe this is just a model city block where they test out driver-less cars. Are the people even real? Once you bump into them they never get back up. Is this purgatory? Did the rat die from eating all that pizza and this is the gluttony part of The Divine Comedy? Alright I'll shut up now. It's 2 o' clock in the morning.
