Nothmere

I have finally beaten this game, and tanned its hide. In short, this game is for old-head Quest for Glory lovers, but do not expect Quest for Glory because this is its own adventure. The main thing that may throw off people who expected a spiritual QfG successor is that your stats do not go up as you use them, but are instead invested in when you gain a level. This game is a passion effort by an incredibly small but dedicated team to keep the old school adventure genre going. You'll find plenty of fun mentions and references to classic Sierra games, and you'll also find a compelling adventure awaiting for you. I ran into a few minor bugs while playing such as not being able to level up, but just continuing to play the game seemed to fix those issues, I haven't been able to figure out exactly what was going on with that but I did enjoy that there were no dead-man walking states, and the puzzles usually weren't too head scratching or using moon logic, and this was very appreciated. I have been playing Nothmere since yesterday and am thoroughly enjoying it so far. It is relatively easy to make money, it has items you can buy that boost your stats and an engaging story. Just practicing skills is a challenge, as it depends on XP and leveling up instead of repetition. Otherwise a really nice game.

I don't want to give a negative review: it is a nice little game especially considering nostalgia. But it feels like 90% of the time I'm just switching from "use" to "walk" action. Sure, it was a thing in the past, but I very much prefer a default action: if I'm clicking on a person then almost certainly I want to speak. Same with doors and passages. Also location exits can be more obvious: pixel hunting isn't a fun thing.

Good game with multiple solutions to most problems.

Absolutely loved playing this game, it takes me back to playing games on my Amiga 500 in the 1990's when games were simpler, fun and with bags of atmosphere which Nothmere has. Haven't enjoyed playing a game as much as this for years! This adventure RPG genre is something that hasn't been exploited enough in my view. Def recommend.

The passion and commitment that has gone into this game is obvious. Drawing heavily on Quest for Glory and old school Sierra favourites, this is a must have for fans. There are loads of Easter eggs and I found the Quill of Complaints quest hilarious. That said, it is not without its flaws. Whilst most of the release bugs have been resolved through the subsequently released patches, there are some innate design shortcomings that highlight the fact that this is a fan project rather than a commercial work with a large budget. This is evident in the mix match of animation styles and limited (although not bad) musical score. One of the things that made the QFG series so memorable in my opinion was their references and settings within cultural folklore (be it Germanic, Arabic, African, Eastern European or even Grecian). Whilst Nothmere has a deep and interesting plot, it is not set within in any culture and I felt this made it feel just a bit shallower.
