Challenging and fun. I enjoyed the mechanic of having to change form, it was something different and refreshing. It was also reliant purely on your skill. No luck or items required (well just for the checkpoints). Like with Celeste you don't get punished for dying because of the checkpoints. You quickly start over at the checkpoint and try again. There are plenty but you do have to unlock them. Apart from the unlock tokens there are no items to collect. As someone who Must Obtain All Collectibles it was kind of nice not to have that so I could just focus on the gameplay. I do wish the story/world was a bit more fleshed out and had a better conclusion though. Obviously the original goal is simple - get Elvis a new house - but it could have been a lot more poignant, the potential was there. I mean its a world so racist even wood and metal hates you.

On Rusty Trails is a tightly designed indie platforming experience that combines mechanical ingenuity, striking visual identity, and understated thematic depth into a compact but memorable journey. Developed and published by Black Pants Studio, the game places players in control of Elvis, a small robot whose existence becomes precarious when the environment itself turns hostile. What initially appears to be a straightforward platformer gradually reveals itself as a carefully layered experience where movement, perception, and adaptation are inseparably linked. The defining feature of On Rusty Trails is its central transformation mechanic, which allows Elvis to switch between two different states using a special suit. Each form changes how the world reacts to him: platforms that are safe in one form may be deadly in the other, hazards may disappear or suddenly become lethal, and paths can open or close depending on the chosen state. This mechanic is not confined to isolated puzzles but is woven into nearly every jump and movement sequence, forcing players to constantly assess their surroundings and react in real time. The result is platforming that feels intellectually engaging as w…

If you love skill-based platformers that rely purely on mechanics rather than luck or power-ups, this is a must-play. The controls are smooth and precise (highly recommend using a gamepad), and the difficulty curve feels just right—failures always feel fair, and you can feel yourself improving with each attempt. Quick retries and frequent checkpoints keep frustration low. What really makes this game shine is its fantastic soundtrack and gorgeous art style. A great find for platformer enthusiasts!
