About Open The Gates!

Sidescrolling Castlebuilder. Real-time strategy game.

The emperor has lost control over his kingdom! Now he has appointed you as the leader of a new conquest.

Become a master of castle building and defense in this genre-blending sidescroller game. As you construct and fortify your fortress, you'll have a variety of defenses at your disposal, including walls, towers, and traps. But the real fun begins when it's time to launch a counterattack on the hilariously-voiced foes who dare to challenge you.

Build A Thriving Castle

  • Construct houses, inns, jailhouses, hospitals and more to keep your citizens happy.
  • Build lumber camps, quarries and charcoal makers to supply your kingdom with resources.
  • Rule and manage your castle. Hire falconers to get rid of rats and place guard posts to catch criminals.
A quaint city in the Green Fields bustling with life. Each villager will talk to you when you click them. Their opinion of you will become quite clear!

Prepare Defenses and Attack

  • Construct walls and towers to stall the enemy and prevent them from breaking into your castle.
  • Fend off massive sieges and upgrade your defenses.
  • Use siege weapons such as the ladderman, the catapult and the siege tower to besiege enemy castles.
  • Control unique units each with their own special crazy abilities like poisonous darts, exploding bolts and a rediculously powerful mace smash attack.
A quaint city in the Yellow Dunes under attack. Wooden walls are not as strong as their stone counterparts but when combined with upgrades such as firebraziers and towers they can make a formidable defense.Siegetowers are a powerful tool for getting units onto enemy walls. Only an extremely good defense can prevent this.

Explore Beautiful Worlds

  • Construct hot air balloons to explore the skies and travel between majestic floating islands.
  • Build settlements in unique locations. There are green fields, hot deserts, volcanic craters and more to be explored.
Hot air balloons are the way you can transport units between floating islands. They can also be used as flying weapons if you place archers in these balloons. The Red Depths are where your greatest fear lies. The fire will spread and is hard to extinguish and the enemy is strong. Here you will face a ghost trying to become mortal once again.
This game is a linear singleplayer experience. Available are over 26 levels across six different worlds allowing for roughly 15 hours of gameplay in the main campaign. Additionally, there are 12 challenging siege mode levels allowing for more gameplay after finishing the story. The game can be quite challenging but difficulty settings are available to tailor your experience. You will encounter fully voice acted characters, both friendly and villainous. The game includes a wide range of units each with their own unique abilities and a great variety in structure types.

Open The Gates! is a medieval real-time strategy game developed and published by Robin van der Horst that presents a creative spin on the castle-building formula by shifting the action into a side-scrolling perspective. Instead of simply imitating genre classics, it builds its own identity through a combination of settlement management, defensive planning, and tactical warfare. The story follows a fractured empire after the emperor's authority has collapsed, placing players in charge of reclaiming the realm one stronghold at a time. While the narrative mainly serves as a framework for the campaign, it successfully motivates the steady introduction of new mechanics, enemy factions, and increasingly demanding objectives. The heart of the experience lies in constructing a prosperous fortress capable of withstanding constant attacks. Every settlement begins with gathering essential resources such as wood, stone, food, and gold before expanding into a thriving military stronghold. Villagers must be assigned efficiently, production chains need to remain balanced, and every new building contributes to the long-term survival of the kingdom. As enemy armies grow stronger, players are encou…

Definitely a pleasant game, lots of content and definitely lots of strategies to employ. Although I will state that the difficulty "Spikes" out of nowhere, doesn't matter what difficulty you're playing on the missions go from being decent to get whooped "enemies invade in 3min" in that time you have to build a whole town and gather units and a defense and it's honestly complicated and unreasonable. --> If not for the ridiculous moments where the enemy invades where you have very little prep time this would be a fantastic game for what it is, however that is just annoying! It's still a wonderful game but this makes it very annoying <--

An RTS side-scrolling city-builder game, it has a lot of charm. Criminally underrated. There is no pause, so the micro management can get intense sometimes, but knowing when to turtle and when to charge all out with the right unit type, makes all the difference. The visuals are varied and the voice acting is funny. Having never heard of this game until today leads me to believe that there are many hidden gems within the Steam catalog
