About Osmos

✦ AI summary

Grow your mote by absorbing smaller particles in this physics-based puzzle game, but manage your momentum carefully since propelling yourself shrinks you down. Osmos blends meditative gameplay with elegant minimalist design, procedurally generated levels, and a haunting electronic soundtrack that evolves from serene to strategically demanding.

Enter the ambient world of Osmos: elegant, physics-based gameplay, dreamlike visuals, and a minimalist, electronic soundtrack.
Your objective is to grow by absorbing other motes. Propel yourself by ejecting matter behind you. But be wise: ejecting matter also shrinks you. Relax - good things come to those who wait.
  • Independent Games Festival finalist in three categories: Seumas McNally Grand Prize, Excellence in Design and Technical Excellence
  • Progress from serenely ambient levels into varied and more challenging worlds. (47 levels, plus bonus content)
  • Confront attractors, repulsors and intelligent motes with similar abilities and goals as you
  • Selected as one of the 2009 PAX 10
  • Procedural content: play random versions of any level
  • Sublime electronic soundtrack by Loscil, Gas/High Skies, Julien Neto, Biosphere, and more
  • Dynamic time-warping: slow down the flow of time to outmaneuver agile opponents; speed it up to raise the challenge

Somehow, 17 years later, I'm drawn back to this game. A mixture of anxiety and calmness. A little bit of luck and planning, and the game isn't too terribly difficult. Excellent ambient soundtrack and just a good way to spend a few hours forgetting about the world around you.

Purchased for 2,45 euros. You can make this game either extremely relaxing or extremely challenging. On the one end you turn off the in-game music (fitting but very limited) and provide your own tracklist, and let the smallest movements guide you towards veeeeeery slowly becoming the biggest. Or don't and just float around endlessly forever while vibing to some good music. On the other end you turn off the in-game music (again, fitting but very limited) and provide your own tracklist, and you master what this game actually expects from you, which will require patience and can be very frustrating because of the finicky controls (I played with a mouse). Which is why I probably can't bring myself to get the last achievement I need... To be clear: in my opinion and experience, everything before the forever zones is perfectly doable with some commitment and you can consider the game beaten at that point. But you know, opinions and experiences vary... My enjoyment significantly outweighed my frustration, so... recommended.

Terribly designed, the 'cost' of movement is too high. Sound design poor. You can 'lose' an entire stage instantly or also alternatively win and just kinda have to have it on max-speed until finally you win (repulsor stages in particular are awful)

It's a very simple, but careful game. Relaxing and meditative.
