Information / Review English
Pocket Spouse falls into the 2D action RPG genre developed by Seth Fasnacht.
Gameplay / Story
In this adventure, we explore various bays/beaches, forests, and become the owner of a large castle, which also features a marketplace in the center where trade takes place. As the lord of the castle, we must trade in our daily lives to fill our purses. We also cook, craft various items, and host our guests with many delicious dishes and drinks. However, there are others out there who want to get their hands on us and seize our possessions. We equip our heroes with equipment and thus fight our enemies, whether animal or human. Talk to the locals, visit the shops and guilds, seek a royal audience, and explore the deep forests and sunny beaches.
Pros
+ Long-term motivation + Dark story and setting + Various guilds + Hunting, building, cooking, fishing + Good menu navigation and controls + Good value for money
Cons
- Music gets annoying at some point - English language only
Conclusion
Pocket Spouse offers you a solid tactical strategy role-playing game that ensures long-term motivation. Pocket Spouse is a 2.5D isometric platformer with some role playing aspects. The player can move from place to place but the game loads the segment rather than scrolls like most titles. The player has many tasks to undertake such as finding a spouse and establishing a home. Hunting and fishing can improve the experience. The game is more or less open ended by design so it possible to play for 10-15 or so hours. This game is best played with a controller. My fleet of laptops are all widescreen. This game is hard coded to XGA which is 1024x768. Played this on my Dell XPS 9570 with GTX 1050 Ti Max Q 4GB. My Dell has 3840x2160 UHD IGZO graphics. Game is very playable.6 found this helpful
🏡 An Old-School RPG I Really Wanted To Get Working I had already spent quite a bit of time with the demo of Pocket Spouse before starting the full game, so I had a pretty good idea of what I was getting into. I enjoyed what I'd previously played enough that when I ran into some rather frustrating window and display issues with the full version, I was determined to get the bloody thing working properly rather than simply giving up on it. And I'm glad I persevered. Pocket Spouse is very much an old-school RPG, made with RPG Maker and presented with some lovely pixel art. You begin in your newly purchased home with a few tasks to complete before heading out into the wider world, meeting the locals, exploring the different areas and gradually discovering what there is to do. It doesn't hold your hand particularly tightly, which I actually think will appeal to people who enjoy this style of RPG. You're expected to explore, interact with things and figure some of the systems out for yourself. Occasionally, though, I think it goes a little too far in that direction. It took me about five minutes just to work out how to use the fast travel system because I couldn't find the particular…4 found this helpful
After picking your character from a premade selection of four guys and four girls, you end up inside your bedroom. There’s not much of an introduction to the game’s world or what exactly you’re supposed to be doing, but if you’re interested in some of the lore, you can read a few books on various topics by interacting with bookshelves. As for everything else, you’ll need to figure out how things work on your own. First of all, objects you can interact with are not marked in any way. This leads to a lot of walking around and pressing the interaction button in front of everything just in case it has something interesting. Most interactions simply give you a comment, but some reveal more and let you pick up an item here and there. However, while your home offers plenty of these interactions, the rest of the game isn’t nearly as generous, and it’s best not to waste time with them unless something really stands out or looks important, such as notes or unique items. This doesn’t apply to the various characters populating the world, who you’ll naturally want to talk to. However, unless they own a business, they don’t have anything interesting to say and simply repeat the same dialogue. …3 found this helpful
The game is definitely very well done, especially for an indie developer! There were some bugs starting off, which is to be expected during early releases, but these were quickly fixed in later builds. I had a blast recording this twice and hope to play through more both on and off screen! The developers are also very friendly, definitely recommend!1 found this helpful
A fantastic game so far. Admittedly, I havnt gotten very far because I am taking my time and enjoying the game slowly, but I have played both the playtest and the full release now (plus DLC). Like others have commented, you choose your spouse from one of four males or females and then they are plopped down into the world for you to control. There is a brief tutorial now explaining what to do to make a little bit of money but otherwise you're left on your own to explore. You want lore? Talk to people and read the books on the bookshelves. I believe all of the bookshelves have things on them for you to read, or at least a little dialogue explaining why your spouse doesnt read those books. Heck, reading some of the books even gives you notes in your inventory giving you quests to do! Once you have saved up a little bit of money you can buy a weapon so that your spouse can defend themselves against the monsters on the island. This is the part of the game I have gotten to so far. I can finally fight those bees instead of dying to their poison all the time! Still need to get stronger to fight the other creatures however. You will need to do a lot of exploring to find out what all …1 found this helpful
