About Populous™ II: Trials of the Olympian Gods

Defeat the most powerful deities in the Greek pantheon, child of Zeus, and take your rightful place on Mt Olympus. Learn to shatter the sky with lightning and shower the earth with fire. Summon heroes to aid your people and plagues to destroy the enemy. Play the second great “god game” from the minds behind Black & White, and prove you have what it takes to stand among the divine.

Key features:
  • Use dozens of godly powers. Populous 2 bestows even more amazing powers upon you, giving you control of earth, wind, water, wind, flora, and — most importantly — people. Protect your crucial settlements with ghastly swamps, create deadly whirlwinds, or grow a beautiful forest around the enemy base…before setting it on fire.
  • Summon the heroes of old. Odysseus, Herakles, Perseus, and more are yours to command, each with their own special ability. Bless them with your favor, and use their strengths well to win the day.
  • Conquer a massive world. With 1,000 maps to conquer, you’re going to have every opportunity to put your skills to the test. Best your enemy on every map (or skip a few when you secure a decisive victory) with the promise of true godhood waiting at the end.

Played this little gem in the days of the Amiga 500. Hint: once you get font pools beware of sending a powered being in that direction. If they fall into a pool then they're suddenly working for 'the other side'. In that eventuality have lightning, earthquakes or quicksand to dispatch them.

Still a great game after all this time. This isn't a remake/rerelease like some people here like to think . It is just the original pc version run in dosbox with all its original quirks and flaws. If it's too fast just adjust the cpu speed (F10 / F11) or set it to fullscreen mode (F7) The price is high for such an old game run in dosbox. so just wait for a good sale if you want to add it to your collection (again)

Populous II: Trials of the Olympian Gods, developed by Bullfrog Productions and published by Electronic Arts, builds on the foundation of the original Populous by expanding both its scale and its identity, transforming a relatively abstract god game into a more structured and thematic experience. Drawing heavily from Greek mythology, it casts the player as a rising demigod competing for recognition among the Olympian deities, giving each battle a clearer narrative purpose. Instead of simply shaping land and guiding followers, you are now engaged in a divine trial, steadily proving your power through a long sequence of increasingly demanding encounters. The central gameplay loop remains rooted in indirect control, where influence over the world is more important than direct command. Your followers act largely on their own, spreading across the land, building settlements, and clashing with opposing tribes. Your role is to guide them through the use of divine powers, which are fueled by mana generated through population growth. This creates a natural cycle where expanding your influence leads to greater power, which in turn allows for more decisive interventions. Managing this balanc…

A blast from the past. I played this to death back in the day. If you're after a nostalgia kick, just be aware that GUI have advanced a long way since then, and it's a bit of a clumsy interface. Otherwise, it holds up nicely, and seems to run just fine. In fact, the first thing you should do is turn down the game speed a little, because it runs a bit fast. It's not as in-depth as I remember, but it's still fun. I just wish they'd re-release Powermonger.
