About Populous™
Shape the very earth itself as a god commanding mortal armies, using terrain manipulation and divine magic to outmaneuver rival deities in this genre-defining strategy classic. Populous pioneered the god game formula by letting you reshape the isometric world to suit your needs—flood enemies, raise mountains for your followers, and unleash catastrophic spells to claim victory through cunning and cosmic power.
Key features:
- Transform the world with your godly might. Use divine magic to create a perfect homeland for your followers, control storms, or plant a volcano right in your rival’s backyard.
- Test your strategic skills. Winning this war takes more than numbers — you’ll have to know how to use them. Think quickly to give your armies an advantage, outsmart your rival, and become the most powerful god in all the land.
- Experience the game that defined a genre. Black & White, Spore, Viva Piñata — Populous’ influence reaches far and wide. Play this isometric classic, and discover a game that made history.

Populous, developed by Bullfrog Productions and published by Electronic Arts, is a pioneering strategy title that helped define what would later be known as the god game genre. Released at a time when most strategy games focused on direct control and micromanagement, it introduced a radically different idea: instead of commanding individuals, you influence an entire civilization by shaping the world around them. This shift in perspective gives the game a distinctive identity that still feels unusual even by modern standards. The foundation of the experience lies in indirect control. Your followers act on their own, building homes, expanding territory, and engaging with opposing tribes without direct orders. Your role is to guide their development by manipulating the terrain, flattening land so they can build more efficiently and grow their population. This population, in turn, fuels your divine power, creating a feedback loop where expansion leads to greater influence, and greater influence enables more dramatic interventions. cool game but i wish i had read the instructions since this game came out in 1989 meaning no in game guide
Awesome game! I had this on Sega Genesis back in the day. It's still fun after all these years.
Like an old car: a little laggy here and a little loose there. Maybe this is not the best-ever version of this glorious game in existence - but it's still the mind-blowing Bullfrog / Peter Molyneux game from the late '80s that created its own genre. There are some others that had similar mechanics more or less (Populous II obviously, Settlers, Black'n'White) but this was the first of its kind. OG. The gameplay with all of its goofs is like back in the days. The fun also just like back in the days. You don't drive old cars for practicality. You drive them for experiencing the fun of past ages. Populous is exactly like that. Nostalgy. I seriously doubt that it can find a young playerbase. The only downside (to me at least) is that the original music and sound FX are not there. I must add that I played the Amiga version, maybe the PC port was somewhat different anyway, I have no idea. I'm still positive about it. This version of Populous is a classic that works fine on modern systems. Okay, DOSbox, whatever. I know. Go home boomer.
really enjoyed the game when it came out.. many hours of fun vs PC and friends. had a paper manual.. steams version should come with a pdf or something but yoiu can find one around... very primitive interface as they had no 'pointer tips' back then. bought it for 'nostalgia'..not that much fun as the cursor is not smooth when placing/removing terrain
