RATMOUSE

I thought Ratmouse was just another weird game with a ridiculous name that I'd play for a few minutes and forget about. I was wrong. The graphics are simple. The gameplay is simple. And at the center of it all is something that should not exist. A ratmouse. I don't know what it is. I don't know why it exists. I don't know why I care about it. But I do. There's something strangely satisfying about watching this tiny creature exist, make progress, and somehow turn complete nonsense into an experience I actually want to keep playing. What I love most is that Ratmouse doesn't try to explain itself. It doesn't need to. It gives you a ratmouse. You accept the ratmouse. And eventually, the ratmouse becomes part of your life. I've played games with better graphics, bigger worlds, and much more impressive characters. I don't remember most of them. I'll remember the ratmouse. Some games are fun while you're playing them. Ratmouse makes you stare at a creature that looks like someone combined two animals by accident and realize that you would now die for it. 100% recommended.

Several thoughts: 1) Oh ♥♥♥♥ a rat 2) I refuse to believe a rat would take fright-based damage from a ghost, which means the ghost must be stabbing me (not depicted) 3) I hate the enemies so much I want to kill cockroaches in real life 4) Rive night Rickies 5) What is this, some kind of RATMOUSE? Oh and I really like the cutscenes, which is pretty sick for a free game, even if they are somewhat basic just saying

RATMOUSE is a really odd little arcade game, but I think that is exactly why I enjoyed it. I play as Barbra, a rat trying to survive through nasty, run down places that are full of bugs. My main job is to clear them out and collect crumbs along the way. The whole thing is simple enough to understand almost immediately, but it has a strange amount of personality for such a small game. It feels like something made because the developer had a funny idea and just decided to go all the way with it. The actual gameplay is very focused on moving quickly and dealing with enemies before they overwhelm me. I have a knife to fight with, and the areas are filled with bugs that I need to clear while also keeping an eye on where I am going. I like the arcade style because it does not waste much time explaining itself. I can pick it up, play for a while and quickly understand what I am supposed to be doing. The hand made stages also help because the environments feel deliberately put together rather than looking like random areas thrown together to make the game longer. The pixel art is probably my favourite part outside of the gameplay. Everything has a dirty and slightly disgusting look to it…

Good game to spend a half hour or so on. I really like the hand drawn style.
