About Roll For Initiative
Roll for Initiative in an Introductory to Tabletop RPG in a video game.
It is a video game to introduce the player to RPG mechanics, exploration, combat, and class distinctions of tabletop reminiscent of Dungeons and Dragons or Pathfinder.
It is daunting - the infinite amount of information and rules to play Dungeons and Dragons or Pathfinder. In this game, the rules and material are built-in to teach the player as they advance each level.
Dice, characters, enemies, and bosses are all included in the game.
The look and feel is tabletop. The dice fall from the top for each move and give accurate damage totals.
Immersive Role Player game. Grab a seat at the table.

"Roll For Initiative" was a noble intention but at the same time it didn't quite work out... it feels from this that the developers weren't sure if they wanted to make a ripoff of Roll 20, or a really dry, boring version of Baldur's Gate 2. There's some content for players but it's only an hour long, and while CRPGs are welcome and sorely underrepresented on Steam, the way they went around this one isn't right. See, the idea with making a good CRPG, a conversion of a pen + paper game is to keep the exciting aspects of combat, puzzle solving, narrative and all that and abstract or streamline the RPG system itself... after all, the computer can handle that. In this "I can't believe it's not an alpha" RPG, the developers went the other way and put all the fun parts of tabletop RPGs on the back burner so they could focus on the boring bits like dice rolling and mucking around with miniatures to make sure the DM isn't being a jerk. The graphics in this game are passable, but could be better. And while it's vital for any game to have impressive visuals (gaming is a visual medium, after all), there's more to a game than just the graphics. To be worth a gamers time, the game must m…3 found this helpful
Actually trash. Visuals like a game from 2004, controls barely work, you can't shoot across gaps, you can't partial move, action, then move again, basic actions like Dodge or Dash are nonexistent, enemies have no AI and don't move until you're within attack range, the End Turn button is buggy, picking up items is buggy, you can try to move and use up all your movespeed without actually moving. Oh, and the menu looks crap and the only graphics options are 480p and 720p. The 1080p button changes it back to 480p again.2 found this helpful
Downloaded this game out of curiosity as it has been awhile since I checked on a free indie game. Supposed to be some kind of turn based dungeons and dragons sim where dice drop from the ceiling and the whole thing is meant to be a table top brought to life. Well that last bit certainly is true, as the game is as stilted and wooden as they come. Not gonna be too mean to the boys at Nerdzgarage as this is the first game I've seen by them, it was free, and it took me less than an hour to complete, but I can't really recommend this to anyone when it barely even works. By all means, please keep making games though - it will be nice to watch a developer grow as time goes on The glitches are probably the worst part of this game as they make this already mediocre game frustrating to play. The ranger's health looked depleted from the start of the first map until she was hit once - then it was like she remembered her health bar was a thing. Characters sometimes move and attack but don't show they have - resulting in scenarios where empty air is menacing the monster of the hour or where a monster is technically dead but doesn't realize it until they get one last hit in. Or the character ev…1 found this helpful
Some design choices have been made that should not have been. Some things that I have to assume were not intentional also enter into the mix. Over all, free or not I can't recommend this. It's a bunch of little annoying things that all add up. But... It just seems poorly done. I'd avoid it.1 found this helpful
It's Free. It's Raw. Very Early Access. Many Bugs. Will give it a Thumbs-Up only because I love dungeon crawling games, and I hope this one pans out. But it's gotta long ways to go! Will check back in a month on this one.
