About CrossOver: Roll For Initiative

Warning: despite appearances, this is a hectic, mind-juggling action game; you are advised to try the demo first.

It's late at night in your 80’s bedroom, and a weird energy fills the air, making your “G64” computer flicker oddly. Brushing it off, you roll up a character sheet for the tabletop roleplaying games on your shelf. Before you finish, dark portals appear on your desk and little pixel creatures cross over into our world! Defend your character through the stages of each campaign book - whether it’s all in your head or not.

A Unique Gameplay Hybrid

CrossOver takes some classic concepts from traditionally “casual” genres (Match 3 and Tower Defence) and crosses them into a new and eccentric challenge with Action, Strategy, RPG and Puzzle elements. Featuring over 100 levels in fantasy and sci-fi settings, extra game modes, and uniquely asymmetrical Co-op modes (one player controlling the dice and the other handling the attacks), CrossOver is... let's face it, it's bloody weird. Good thing there's a demo, right?

A Deep Challenge

Each campaign includes:
 • Shops to buy armor and items
 • RPG progression (earn XP, level up, increase stats)
 • Dozens of spells and weapons to find
 • Mercenaries to hire
 • Random encounters with Fighting Fantasy book type choices
 • Persistent gems to unlock classes/races (15 of each per game setting) or trade in for extra gold

A Wealth Of Content

 • Fantasy and Sci-Fi game modules - more genres may be released later as expansions
 • 7 x Solo Campaign books per module, each with several stages
 • Local Co-op toggle for all main Campaigns (gamepad-only control for dice), plus Steam Remote Play Together for a player to join in remotely (gamepad required)
 • Dedicated Online Lobby Co-op Mode (2nd player's mouse control for dice) - instead of the full campaigns, this has special Scenarios (7 for each game module) featuring premade characters for streamlined play, plus 2 Endless Modes
 • Procedurally generated Endless Modes (both Solo and Online Lobby Co-op for each game module, no Local Co-op) to challenge the Online Leaderboards
 • Dice Defense game mode for each game module - autobattling dice towers to upgrade and move against endless waves of enemies (Solo only)
 • Unlockable art gallery
 • Hidden minigame

Difficulty Setting - Casual Play

If you're overwhelmed by the game's unrelenting pace, try adjusting the Difficulty Setting. This reduces the damage dealt by enemies, allowing players to focus more on chill enjoyment than frantic survival - without needing to Halt Time to catch a breath. When set to 0, enemies deal no damage at all and Deterrents (which act as a pseudo time limit) are disabled, enabling you to play completely at your leisure. These settings are only for Solo/Local Co-op Campaign play and can be toggled on or off at any point without needing to restart a campaign. The game's still weird, though.
A mashup of three game genres that's less than the sum of its parts. I would rather play the match-3 individually and either have the shooter automated or not present at all. I wish I could give a neutral review - this isn't bad, but it isn't good enough for me to recommend, either.

The Good:

The art for the races/species and for the events is beautiful, done in a fun sketchy pencil style.
The idea of combining a top-down shooter (it's not really a tower defense, despite the label), an rpg, and a match-3 is really fun, and there are some genuinely good ideas here (like having the match-3 work as ammunition, where if it works out well you only have to match-3 in the lulls between enemy waves, or the random items/spells/money you get after each completed arena)
You can pause the game at any time to check the glossary and strategize, or even just stare at the dice box for another match.
If you go too long without making a successful move in the match-three, it will point out a match to you.
The match-3 dicebox actually has some interesting strategy - instead of the dice always moving in the same direction, they move in the direction of your las…

The idea is fantastic, but the gameplay sucks. Play the demo first, and if you like it, wait for the sale. I got mine with 88% discount.

What a fun concept and actually very fun game. Innovation on the match 3 game, a fun roguelike campaign, and a fun anxiety rush trying manage my character and match dice to get resources. Lots of fun metal multithreading, im looking forward to putting more time into this.

Nice little not-quite tower-defense, heavily RPG and certainly match 3. Reviews claim "tower defense" and the game lists that feature, but all there is that resembles a tower are mercenaries, and they only stay on the board for 20+ seconds and then you have to hire more of them to defend you. I have yet to see a tower. Okay I was confused by this game when I tried to play the demo. Then I forgot about it, but saw it on sale for 88% off at just a little over a dollar, and decided to go ahead and try again. But this time everything clicked. So if you're familiar with the DnD dice, there is a 4-sided, 6-sided, 8-sided, etc. And the number of sides is always the same number when playing the match-3. And when you score in the match-3, that makes those dice available for casting or whatever attack you want from your collection of weapons and spells. If what I just wrote made sense to you - you've played enough of these sorts of games so this will all make sense relatively quickly. BUT if it didn't make sense, this game doesn't bother to explain this all to you! That was a big failure I think - they really should not have assumed that everyone knows how attack rolls work. The…

Got it for almost free and played a bit and didn't hate it - so I guess positive review? But the game feels like it was an id3ea and got built with not much additional thought. A lot of systems work poorly with each other and the UX is pretty bad. Don't get this unless it's on deep sale.
