About Run TavernQuest
Run TavernQuest is a role-reversing twist on old school text adventure games. You're the command parser and game master, overseeing the game's inner workings for a player named STEVE. Can you guide STEVE away from his poor decisions so he can save the princess? In this game, you won't be typing. Instead, STEVE is the player and he types commands to you, often very bizarre ones. Your job is to interpret his words and choose how the adventure proceeds. The choices you make can lead him down drastically different paths, but it's ultimately up to STEVE to win the game.
Features
- Fully narrated, featuring the very talented Jack Dundon
- Control the environment and every NPC as they respond to STEVE's stupid commands
- Engage in text-based combat where your goal is to lose every time
- Customizable font and grayscale mode for enhanced readability

This is an often delightful and thoughtful game. Though not without its criticisms, I noticed that MANY of the top reviews for this game are from people who barely played it, with many updoots and even Steam "thanks!" awards given. That's what spurred me to write a review in the first place. They played it so little that they didn't even realize what genre it is, which I'll call a Metanarrative VN. The marketing for this game does not do it justice, but these types of games always have a difficult challenge in that regard. It is presented as "you are the embodiment of a text adventure game (think Zork), playing along with a doofy and careless player, swapping the traditional roles as a way to get goofs". That stuff is present and is funny and fun, in a Monty Python way, but what the game really is is along Metanarrative VN lines; think Stanley Parable (the author of this game worked on at least the Ultra Deluxe version of that game), think Doki Doki Literature Club, think at the absolute peak of this bespoke genre Inscryption, although that game reaches such transcendiary heights that it's unfair to compare much else to it). If you grew up on text adventures, as I did, this game…1 found this helpful
I used to play a lot of text based games and still occasionally play some. While the game involves selecting choices instead of typing text directly into a parser, I love the aesthetic, and the story went in a completely different direction than I expected. I also found it hilarious, and it had me laughing so hard I was crying at certain points. This game is definitely entertaining, at times thought-provoking, and I definitely recommend it. After an hours-long discussion, debate, and voting session, all the rats in my basement officially approve of this game too.
Oh my god I thought I knew what this game would be and I was so very very wrong. It made me think about the nature of free will and the effort it takes to break negative patterns! I was actually concerned for the characters! I had a genuine meaningful emotional response to it! I like Steve!! I expected this game to be good and it absolutely blew my expectations out of the water. Highly recommend, very very worth the money and the time. (Also legitimately hilarious, in addition to meaningful and thought-provoking).
Just a simple game about rescuing a princess from a tower. : )
