Rusty Rabbit

Rusty Rabbit feels like a game with a split personality. It boasts a high-profile writer and a big-name voice cast that give it the veneer of a promising game. The art and character designs are genuinely well-crafted. On the other hand, the game itself has a slew of issues. The gameplay feels like a distant, clunkier cousin to F.I.S.T. Everything from the platforming to the combat is slow and imprecise. Movement lacks impact and precision, with some maneuvers feeling about as graceful as a bull in a china shop. The dialogue is incessantly slow, and painfully repetitive. You will be constantly reminded of the same few minor bulletnotes of a story as if the game doesn't trust you to remember, and will really hammer home the same things throughout every cutscene or interaction. Combat is largely a button-mashing affair. Most bosses are complete statues, with the sole exception suffering from its own problems, such as an overly generous hitbox that can cause you to take damage two or three times from a single hit, and poorly telegraphed attacks. Game is cool, it's mix of platformer with exploration and some RPG elements. I like many things about it, story, humour, level design, setting (even if the last thing is copied from F.I.S.T.),unfortunately it crashes quite often.

Edit: Originally this got a "yes" from me, despite its flaws - and now I've found too many cardinal sins, chief among which is the cardinal sin of grinding. You *never* make a player grind. I came to a point in this game where I NEEDED an upgrade to progress the main story, and in order to get that upgrade, I had to grind (not buy, but grind) for TEN hydraulic cylinders. That may not sound like much, but when you have NO CLUE where to find them, and enemies aren't guaranteed to drop them, you literally have to go map to map through the ENTIRE game (which is honestly a lot) in order to get them. The game was going smoothly overall but this wall stopped all progress. Do not buy this game. You are going to be nothing but disappointed. Between the Yakuza games and Promise Mascot Agency, I was kind of teed up to expect a good time for anything featuring Takaya Kuroda on the voice cast and... well this mostly gets there. I love the visual style and the fuzziness of the rabbit cast, and how their cosmology has somehow gotten entwined with the Beatrix Potter Peter Rabbit classics. The search action itself is okay, though it can get a little tedious drilling through every last block after a while, a problem alleviated once you get some more mobility upgrades by progressing the story. The visual variety of the different areas is nice, especially later in the game, and the difficulty doesn't spike too aggressively so long as you're paying attention to your upgrades and your additional equipment. On the whole, I had a good time, and the way the story shook out through the DTAM terminals you find was cute. That's not to say the game is lacking issues, however. Here are my few complaints/caveats. - If you want the good stuff, it's gonna be a grind. a very weirdly high production value story attached to a pretty barebones search-action title that could've maybe used some of that budget on the game part. Still, it gets the job done. I'd say it's worth experiencing, even if the 100% is more on the absurdly grindy side of the scale

Remember when Sony released the PSP and mainline non-canon IPs made games for it that all felt like bootlegs? (Daxter, R&C size matters, Those two God of wars) This game would fit right in among those. It has a all star cast of VAs but a lack of content that is spread out thin and pumped up with grinding endless quests. Would've made a better Roguelite than a Metroidvania, could've even done both. I'd only recommend it if you have nothing else you rather do, its on sale, and you have a steam deck with a long train/plane ride ahead of you.
