Scourge: Outbreak

You know those movies that are so bad they almost become good. Here, it's exactly that, Scourge: Outbreak is sometimes so ridiculous it becomes funny :) There are so many weird things that I've wondered more than once what the hell was going on in the minds of its creators. It starts from the tutorial, where you are taught how to throw a grenade inside a PLANE... Sure, sure, you can do whatever you want inside futuristic planes... Next, the scenario is presented: since 10 years, Nogari Corporation, the world's largest fuel company is selling the best existing type of fuel. But wait! An insider revealed that the fuel contains alien DNA and is certainly responsible for the epidemic ravaging the planet. It's the task of the Echo squad to investigate the Nogari installations, find evidence and rescue the insider... Then after a few fights, you will quickly discover the gameplay loop: a room or an area with a crazy number of soldiers to kill. When the room isn't big and more than 30 soldiers have died in the same place, you might think the game gave up the notion of realism. But no, a short scene is here to restores credibility: Nogari is cloning its employees in secret!... There was …

Got to second level and everyone is throwing grenades, it's crazy! Did the devs not make sure that enemies were not grenading psychos. I played a bit of the original and that seems much better, I'll just go back to playing that one even though the graphics are worse and the enemies are more spongy.

Picked this up cheap and went in expecting very little, but Scourge: Outbreak turned out to be a decent time — as long as you bring friends. The Gears of War-style cover mechanics and Mass Effect-ish squad abilities give it a familiar feel, and blasting through waves of alien enemies in co-op is genuinely fun chaos. Solo is a different story: the teammate AI is shockingly bad, with squadmates ignoring your commands, standing on grenades, and running into your line of fire at the worst moments. The guns also feel underpowered against bullet-sponge enemies, and the shotgun has the effective range of a firm handshake. But for $8 with a few friends who don't mind a rough-around-the-edges sci-fi shooter, there's enough here to have a good time — just don't expect polish.
