A marginal no. The basics are there and functional, it's not awful, but the spirit is missing. This game clearly owes a lot to the SNES Gaia series (particularly Illusion of Gaia and Soul Blazer), and to a lesser degree Secret of Mana. They have the vibe down, but it misses the mark in enough places that it's harder to enjoy. 1. COMBAT - Combat is very repetitive. Enemies mostly just sit there and then move slowly towards you, but have too much HP to be killed before they can touch you. So you strike a few times, move back, turn around, do it again. This isn't interesting (or challenging), it's just a little annoying. There's also very little variety in enemy design, even compared to Soul Blazer (which was a very early SNES game). - Spellcasting seems inspired by Secret of Mana, but is extremely limited in comparison -- limited in quantity, limited in variety across elements, and limited in usefulness. - Physical controls are fine, but you basically have an attack and a dash attack and that's it. - You have a partner like in Secret of Mana/Evermore, but unlike in those games, they do almost nothing when you aren't controlling them. They don't attack enemies very much, and …9 found this helpful
Well, that was a huge disappointment. Watching the trailer for this game had me *hyped*. I was a huge fan of Secret of Mana and A Link to the Past, so this seemed like a slam dunk modernization with easy co-op - a big plus for me as I play a lot of games with a friend (usually via Parsec). Unfortunately, this has neither the tight, focused experience of LTTP nor the whimsical charm of Secret of Mana. We chose not to finish it, which is rare for us. It is clunky all around: movement, combat, puzzles, and story. (it's been a few weeks since I last played so forgive me if a couple details are off) * Movement is extremely basic and doesn't feel super tight, but it's passable. You have a basic attack, a magic attack, and a step back move. The controls reference a dodge button but six hours in, we hadn't unlocked that. * Combat is trivially easy. Spam attack button till they get too close, back up, spam again. Same for bosses. Magic was useful sometimes, but I mostly used it because I wanted some slight variety. There was absolutely zero challenge throughout our playthrough. * Puzzles are either extremely basic or esoteric and poorly explained. A lot of them are variations of angling…2 found this helpful
Budget Illusion of Time. Or Terranigma, for that matter. It feels like a romhack or something. The story is definitely silly. But then again, most video game stories were bland back then. It's still fun tho.1 found this helpful
