About Skies above the Great War
Skies above the Great War is set on the Western Front during the First World War. You take the lead of the air forces, either on the allied or the german side. And because every single aircraft is fully simulated in real-time you can take over the control of any aircraft at any moment and join the fight yourself.

FEATURES:
- Take direct control of any plane at any time and prove yourself in easily accessible but challenging dogfights with detailed damage models.
- Provide your airfields with machines and pilots and send them on missions that support your overall war strategy on a persistent 10.000 square kilometers wide gameworld fully simulated in real time.
- From reconnaissance missions to front patrolling, strategic bombing and balloon hunting, it is up to you to use your resources wisely and stand up to the enemy.
- Hire manufacturers such as Fokker or Sopwith to produce airplanes and even to let them develop new models that are able to compete with the constantly advancing technology of your enemy.
- Manage your airfields and squadrons to make them as effective as possible.
- Individualize your squadrons and every single aircraft with custom paintings and insignias.
- Each pilot comes with his individual portrait and a given talent that needs to be transferred into skill. So train them and order them wisely to your squadrons so they can take up their duty in the skies.
- From time to time a name or two will pop up among the ranks of talented newcomer pilots that might be familiar to those interested in history.
- Want to skip one or more of the features above? Just hand it over to the AI and play the game exactly as you like.

I've put a couple of hours into this game now and despite a bit of a hurdle getting used to the controls, it seems like a fun little air combat game based on the WW1 western front. You have several airfields to start with, can deploy new planes and pilots, customize the look of your machines, and take off to fight your enemies over the front lines. Various missions including fighter patrols, recon and photo recon, bombing, interdiction of enemy balloons, and even shooting down enemy zeppelins can be undertaken in real time. There is a small variety of machines that can be deployed initially, and you may research and deploy newer aircraft as the game progresses. There are a few bugs and the game itself is a bit rough around the edges, but it is totally playable.1 found this helpful
A fun little game that scratches an itch Wings 2: Aces High for SNES gave me as a kid.
Broken mess, bad design, iffy and poorly designed UI functionality, incredibly small number of aircraft in play. Air combat is either poorly simulated (if allowed to resolve itself), or boring (if the player handles it). The real-time strategic layer was a serious mistake, as was the way aircraft and pilot assignment is handled. The dev himself has said he's putting much less effort into the game because it didn't sell well enough and he had to get a job, so I don't expect much improvement. Btw, I didn't actually play 20 hours at review time. It was more like 8, but the game froze at one point and made Steam think it was still going.
Fantastic idea and fantastic game! wish the game would continue to get updates! you have something really quite special and unique here.
Two games in one! A very (very, very) basic flight sim that is still a lot of fun, and a management game that is catnip for Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome junkies that lets you manage aerodrome, squadrons, planes, pilots, missions, etc. If you know who Werner Voss and Mick Mannock were, you are going to eat this game up!
Very decent game at a great price
